SINGAPORE — Veteran actress Chen Xiuhuan has shared a little-known story about how she helped bring fellow actor Huang Shinan and his wife, Pan Lingling, together, revealing that their decades-long friendship began well before they entered the entertainment industry.
In an Instagram post shared ahead of her 60th birthday, Chen looked back on her childhood friendship with Huang, 65, and recalled how she initially mistook him for a stalker when he followed her home.
The actress later discovered that Huang lived in a nearby HDB block. What began as a misunderstanding eventually developed into a close friendship, with Huang becoming a familiar presence in her family home.
Chen’s nostalgic account offered fans a glimpse into the early years of three familiar faces in Singapore’s entertainment scene — and the unexpected role she played in the romance between Huang and Pan.
Chen Xiuhuan initially thought Huang Shinan was a stalker
Chen recalled that she first met Huang when they were young, long before either had established a career in show business.
“When I first met him, I actually thought he was a stalker, because he followed me all the way home!” she wrote, explaining that she later discovered he lived in one of the HDB blocks near her home.
The two eventually became good friends, and Huang grew close to Chen’s family.
According to Chen, her family enjoyed having friends over, and Huang visited so frequently that he became almost like a member of the household. He would often drop by for a bowl of noodles.
Their friendship continued as Chen began pursuing acting. Huang later followed her into the entertainment industry, and both attended the Singapore Broadcasting Corporation’s drama training course in 1984.
How Chen helped Huang pursue Pan Lingling
Chen also recalled how Huang once made a special trip to visit her while she was filming a period drama at a remote location in the middle of the night.
He had something important to tell her: he had fallen for a girl.
Chen said she immediately praised the woman when Huang revealed her identity, describing her as beautiful, tall and kind.
The woman was Pan Lingling, whom Chen had previously met at an actors’ training class.
Chen’s encouragement helped Huang pursue the relationship, and the romance eventually blossomed into a lasting marriage.
Playfully addressing Pan in her post, Chen suggested that the actress owed her a thank-you for helping the couple’s love story get started.
She also revealed that the story was a secret Pan herself had not known about.

Huang and Pan first met in 1987 and married in 1996. They have two sons, Beckham and Kynaston.
