North Korea is stepping up public celebrations and patriotic messaging ahead of the 81st anniversary of the founding of its ruling Workers’ Party, using cultural performances, art exhibitions and organized gatherings to reinforce loyalty to the country’s leadership.
The anniversary falls on October 10, 2026, with state media reporting a series of events in Pyongyang and other parts of the country in the days leading up to the occasion.
According to reporting by The Korea Times and South Korea’s Yonhap News Agency, agricultural workers, artists and party-affiliated organizations have participated in activities emphasizing the party’s leadership, ideology and national development goals.
The celebrations come as North Korea continues to use major political anniversaries to highlight its governing ideology and project unity at home.
Cultural Performances and Art Exhibitions Take Center Stage
State media have reported a range of events intended to build a festive atmosphere before the anniversary.
The Union of Agricultural Workers of Korea held a commemorative gathering where participants emphasized strengthening party leadership, reinforcing ideological education and meeting grain-production targets.
Meanwhile, the Youth Central Art Propaganda Team staged a performance, and the National Art Exhibition opened at the Korean Central Art Gallery in Pyongyang. The Party Founding Museum also attracted visitors ahead of the celebration, according to North Korean media reports.
The events combine cultural activities with political messaging, a familiar feature of North Korea’s major state commemorations.
Foreign Congratulatory Messages Add to the Anniversary Atmosphere
North Korean leader Kim Jong-un has also received congratulatory flower baskets from foreign figures and organizations, according to the Korean Central News Agency.
Reported senders included the presidents of Laos and Palestine, along with North Korea’s military attaché corps. Yonhap separately reported that the Communist Party of China sent a congratulatory flower basket.
Such gestures offer a glimpse of the diplomatic symbolism surrounding the anniversary, although they do not by themselves indicate a major change in North Korea’s international relations.
Will North Korea Hold a Major Military Parade?
One question drawing attention is whether the anniversary will include a large military display.
Radio Free Asia reported that satellite imagery taken on October 7 appeared to show groups of personnel and military vehicles assembling at Mirim Airfield in Pyongyang, potentially indicating preparations for a parade. However, the imagery alone does not confirm that a major parade will take place.
South Korean officials, meanwhile, have said they do not expect a large-scale event this year because the 81st anniversary is not considered a milestone year.
North Korea traditionally stages particularly elaborate celebrations in years ending in zero or five. Last year’s 80th anniversary featured a major nighttime military parade at Kim Il-sung Square, where the country unveiled the Hwasong-20 intercontinental ballistic missile, according to reporting by Yonhap.
Whether this year’s celebrations will extend beyond cultural events and smaller gatherings remains uncertain.
Why the Anniversary Matters
The Workers’ Party of Korea has governed North Korea for decades, and its founding anniversary provides an opportunity for the leadership to emphasize political continuity, national identity and loyalty to the state.
The occasion also offers an opportunity to communicate messages about agricultural production, ideological education and the party’s role in directing national affairs.
For observers outside North Korea, the events can provide clues about the government’s public messaging and its preferred image of national unity. However, state-organized celebrations do not necessarily reflect the full range of views among the country’s population.
As October 10 approaches, the key question is whether North Korea will keep its anniversary relatively restrained or use the occasion to stage a more prominent display. For now, cultural celebrations are confirmed, while speculation about a large military parade remains unverified.
