A Florida woman accused of opening fire at Rihanna’s Los Angeles-area home has been indicted on attempted murder and other felony charges, several months after the March shooting.
Ivanna Lisette Ortiz, 36, of Orlando was indicted by a Los Angeles grand jury on one count of attempted murder, 10 counts of assault with an assault weapon and three counts of shooting at an inhabited dwelling or camper. The indictment was returned in June and unsealed on Sept. 30.
Prosecutors allege that Ortiz drove to Rihanna’s Beverly Crest home on March 8 and fired a semiautomatic rifle multiple times at the property. Rihanna, her partner A$AP Rocky, their children and other people were on or near the property at the time, but no one was struck by gunfire.
According to court documents and prosecutors, bullets struck an Airstream trailer on the property as well as parts of the residence, including an exterior wall near a nursery where the couple’s children and a nanny were present.
Authorities also said the shooting affected a neighboring residence. Ortiz was later arrested in Sherman Oaks, a Los Angeles neighborhood north of Beverly Crest.
Ortiz pleaded not guilty after the indictment was unsealed. A judge ordered her held on $2.65 million bail, and she is scheduled to return to court on Oct. 29 for a pretrial hearing.
The case had been delayed while Ortiz underwent a mental competency evaluation. A judge ruled shortly before the indictment was unsealed that she was competent to stand trial, allowing the criminal proceedings to move forward.
The shooting prompted a major police response at the celebrity’s home. Investigators later identified Ortiz as the alleged shooter and continued examining evidence connected to the incident.
Prosecutors have said the case remains under investigation by the Los Angeles Police Department’s Robbery-Homicide Division. If convicted as charged, Ortiz could face up to life in state prison.
The charges remain allegations, and Ortiz is presumed innocent unless proven guilty in court.
