Beach Boys co-founder Mike Love is facing serious health challenges, prompting longtime friend and collaborator John Stamos to share an emotional message about the legendary musician’s condition and his determination to continue performing.
Stamos, best known for his role in Full House, revealed the update in an Instagram tribute on Oct 11, describing the 85-year-old singer as a close friend, mentor and father figure.
“Despite doctors, family and friends urging him to focus on his health, he insists on being on stage,” Stamos wrote, explaining that Love finds strength in performing alongside his band and connecting with audiences.
The announcement has raised concern among fans, particularly after footage of Love performing while seated circulated online.
Neither Stamos nor Love’s representatives have publicly disclosed the specific health conditions behind the latest update.
Mike Love Returns to the Stage Despite Health Concerns
Despite the uncertainty surrounding his condition, Love recently returned to the stage with the Beach Boys for their first public performance since July.
The band performed at PNC Pavilion in Cincinnati, Ohio, on Oct 10. Love was helped onto the stage by his son Christian Love and Stamos before performing while seated.
He contributed backing vocals and thanked the audience for attending, according to reports from the concert.
Stamos told the crowd that Love had been experiencing health issues and had missed shows, but was determined not to miss the Cincinnati performance.
The appearance was an emotional moment for fans who had been waiting for the band’s return following months of cancelled and postponed concerts.
Previous Illnesses Took an Emotional and Physical Toll
Love previously revealed in June that he had been recovering from bronchitis followed by COVID-19.
In a social media post at the time, he also spoke about the emotional toll of losing his sister, Maureen, on the first anniversary of the death of his cousin Brian Wilson, the Beach Boys co-founder who died in June 2025.
Love said the combination of illness and personal loss had affected him both physically and emotionally, although he reported feeling physically stronger as he recovered.
His latest health update has not established whether those earlier illnesses are connected to the serious challenges described by Stamos.
John Stamos Pays Tribute to His Longtime Friend
Stamos, who has performed with the Beach Boys intermittently for more than four decades, described Love as a musician who has brought happiness to generations of fans.
He reflected on their years of touring, performing and sharing personal milestones, including Love officiating his 2018 wedding to Caitlin McHugh.
Stamos also spoke about Love’s relationship with his family, including his young son, Billy, underscoring how their bond extends beyond music.
He acknowledged that Love’s condition has made their time together especially meaningful, while expressing hope that the singer will be able to continue doing what he loves.
A Legacy That Spans Generations
As a founding member of the Beach Boys, Love helped shape the band’s distinctive sound and its place in American popular music. The group became known for enduring hits such as “Good Vibrations”, “California Girls” and “Wouldn’t It Be Nice”.
Across decades of performances, Love has remained closely associated with the band’s touring legacy, bringing its music to audiences around the world.
The Beach Boys’ current tour celebrates the 60th anniversary of their landmark album Pet Sounds, continuing a musical legacy that has lasted for generations.
For now, fans are awaiting further information about Love’s condition. While the full nature of his health challenges remains private, his recent return to the stage has offered a powerful reminder of his enduring connection to the music and the audiences that have supported him throughout his career.
