Tourist Spots ‘Dodgy’ Cash Exchange Near Rubbish Bin in Singapore — Netizens Debate What Really Happened

A tourist visiting Singapore was left puzzled after witnessing what appeared to be a suspicious cash exchange near a public rubbish bin in Jalan Besar, prompting him to ask locals online what might have been happening.

The encounter, captured in a video shared on Instagram by British travel vloggers Ryan and Katie, quickly attracted attention online. While some viewers offered theories about the exchange, others criticised the couple for filming strangers and speculating about their actions without knowing the full story.

What did the tourist see?

In the 62-second video posted on Oct 9, Ryan describes seeing a woman discreetly hand money to a man. He claimed the man then walked ahead and passed something to another man, who subsequently opened a public rubbish bin.

Ryan said he suspected that something unusual was taking place and wondered aloud whether the exchange could have involved illegal goods.

However, the footage did not clearly show the alleged transfer between the two men, and the red plastic bag Ryan described was not visible in the video.

The couple did not establish what was exchanged, and no confirmed evidence has emerged to identify the contents of the bag or establish that a crime took place.

Ryan later told Stomp that he and Katie had spent three days in Singapore and had not made a police report because they were unsure what they had witnessed.

Netizens offer theories — but nothing is confirmed

The video sparked speculation, with some commenters suggesting the transaction could have involved contraband cigarettes or vaping products. Others floated different possibilities, including prohibited tobacco products.

These suggestions remain unverified. The video alone does not establish that the people involved were exchanging illegal goods or engaging in criminal activity.

Some viewers also joked about the incident, while others urged caution against jumping to conclusions based on a short clip.

‘Mind your own business’: Online debate takes another turn

Beyond the mystery itself, the video triggered a debate about whether tourists should film and post encounters involving strangers.

Several commenters argued that the couple should have minded their own business instead of turning an ambiguous incident into online content.

Others defended Ryan and Katie, saying they had simply documented something unusual that happened in front of them while travelling.

The vloggers stood by their decision to share the footage, explaining that documenting what they encounter is part of their travel content.

What happens next?

The incident highlights how quickly an unclear encounter can become a subject of online speculation, particularly when a video lacks the context needed to establish what actually happened.

At the time of the report, the couple had not filed a police report, and the nature of the exchange remained unknown. Stomp said it had contacted the police for comment.

For now, the central question remains unanswered: what, if anything, was being exchanged near the Jalan Besar rubbish bin?

Until further information emerges, claims that the encounter involved contraband or other illegal activity should be treated as speculation rather than fact.
