A FlyDubai flight traveling from Dubai to Tel Aviv was thrown into an extraordinary midair emergency Wednesday after one pilot allegedly attacked and stabbed the other, triggering a steep descent and fears that the aircraft could be hijacked.
Passengers and crew intervened, helping subdue the attacker and allowing the Boeing 737 MAX 8 to make an emergency landing in Tabuk, Saudi Arabia, before the passengers later continued to Israel on another aircraft. The flight was carrying 174 people, according to Associated Press reporting.
Pilot Attack Sends Flight Into Emergency
The incident occurred roughly two and a half hours after the aircraft departed Dubai.
According to officials and passenger accounts, an altercation broke out in the cockpit before one pilot stabbed the captain. The aircraft subsequently descended rapidly from about 33,000 feet to 17,000 feet, according to flight-tracking data cited by the Associated Press.
The sudden descent caused panic among passengers, while Israeli authorities scrambled fighter aircraft amid concerns about a possible hijacking.
The exact motive behind the attack remained unclear, and authorities continued investigating.
Passengers Force Their Way Into the Cockpit
As the aircraft descended, passengers and crew members moved toward the cockpit and managed to enter.
Passenger Yaniv Hayoun told Israeli media that he and others confronted the attacker while the injured captain was also involved in efforts to regain control of the aircraft.
Other passengers and crew then helped secure the cockpit and stabilize the plane. FlyDubai confirmed that an altercation occurred in the flight deck and said its on-duty crew secured the aircraft before diverting it safely.
The emergency landing took place at Prince Sultan bin Abdulaziz International Airport in Tabuk, Saudi Arabia, after the aircraft issued a distress call.
Injured Captain Reported Stable
Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu identified the injured captain as Smit Machchhar, an Indian citizen, and praised his actions during the emergency.
The Indian Embassy in Saudi Arabia said Machchhar was in stable condition. Several passengers also received medical attention after the incident, with reports indicating minor injuries among some passengers.
The suspected attacker was arrested in Saudi Arabia, according to Israeli officials, while authorities in Saudi Arabia and other countries became involved in the investigation.
The motive had not been established.
Why Aviation Experts Were Alarmed
The severity of the aircraft’s descent added another dimension to the incident.
Flight-tracking data showed the plane dropping approximately 16,000 feet in about a minute during the emergency. Aviation experts cited by the Associated Press said the aircraft’s ability to recover and land safely was remarkable given the circumstances.
The aircraft eventually landed safely in Tabuk, where passengers remained before continuing their journey to Israel on another FlyDubai flight.
FlyDubai Suspends Israel Flights
Following the incident, FlyDubai announced that flights to and from Israel would be suspended while the circumstances were investigated.
The episode also prompted coordination among authorities in Saudi Arabia, Israel and the United Arab Emirates, while officials examined what led to the cockpit confrontation and whether there was any broader security threat.
For the passengers aboard the flight, what began as an ordinary journey from Dubai to Tel Aviv suddenly became a race to regain control of an aircraft in midair.
The plane ultimately landed safely — but the investigation now faces the question that remains unanswered: what triggered the cockpit attack in the first place?
