Flash floods hit parts of northern Singapore on Wednesday, Sept. 30, as heavy thundery showers and gusty winds swept across several areas of the island.
The Meteorological Service Singapore warned of moderate to heavy thundery showers over northern, western and central Singapore, with the weather expected to continue through the afternoon. The heavy rain warning was later extended as conditions persisted.
Singapore’s national water agency PUB reported a flash flood at Riverside Road in Woodlands at about 3.13pm. The flooding subsided at around 3.35pm.
A second flash flood was subsequently reported along Neo Tiew Road at about 3.38pm. PUB also warned of a risk of further flash flooding at Riverside Road and Neo Tiew Road as heavy rain continued.
The weather service had earlier forecast thundery showers over many parts of Singapore, with temperatures expected to reach about 33°C and relative humidity ranging from 60 to 95 per cent.
The latest downpour comes as Singapore continues to experience a mix of heavy showers and regional haze. The National Environment Agency has warned that smoke from fires in parts of Sumatra and Kalimantan could continue drifting towards Singapore under prevailing easterly or south-easterly winds.
Despite the rainfall, air quality in several parts of Singapore remained in the unhealthy range on Wednesday morning, while the northern region recorded comparatively better conditions. Authorities have advised the public to take outdoor conditions into account, particularly when air pollution levels are elevated.
The combination of intense rainfall, gusty winds and ongoing haze has made weather conditions changeable across Singapore. Residents in affected areas are advised to monitor official weather and flood updates, especially when travelling through low-lying roads or areas prone to flash flooding.
