Former Malaysian prime minister Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad has been admitted to the National Heart Institute (IJN) for observation, just two days after the death of his wife, Tun Dr Siti Hasmah Mohd Ali.
Mahathir, 101, was admitted on Sept. 29, according to his son Tan Sri Mokhzani Mahathir. Mokhzani said his father was doing well and there was no cause for concern, adding that the hospitalisation was intended to allow doctors to monitor him following the stressful events of the past few days.
“He was admitted to IJN for observation,” Mokhzani said, adding that the past two days had been particularly stressful for his father. He said Mahathir was currently fine and not in a worrying condition.
Siti Hasmah, 100, died at IJN on Sept. 28 after her condition deteriorated following a heart attack. She was buried later that day at Pusara Negara in Putrajaya with full state funeral honours.
Mahathir had been at IJN during his wife’s treatment and was present for her funeral. The couple had been married for 70 years and had seven children.
Mahathir has a history of heart-related health issues and has undergone several hospitalisations over the years, including treatment at IJN. He was also admitted earlier this year following a fall at his residence.
His latest hospitalisation is for observation, and no new medical diagnosis or specific illness has been publicly disclosed. His family has reassured the public that there is currently no cause for concern.
Mahathir served as Malaysia’s prime minister for more than two decades across two separate terms and remains a prominent figure in the country’s political history.
