Health Secretary Edwin Mercado has commended the Philippine Red Cross for quickly deploying personnel to San Lazaro Hospital and flood-affected communities as health facilities faced increased patient loads following recent flooding.
Mercado thanked the Red Cross for sending teams to areas where medical needs were greatest, including hospital wards and communities affected by the floods.
The deployment was carried out as part of the organization’s role as an auxiliary to the government during emergencies. Red Cross Chairman Richard Gordon said the group responds by directing personnel and resources to areas where they are most needed rather than waiting for conditions to worsen.
The teams provided support amid the increase in patients following flooding, helping health workers manage demand at San Lazaro Hospital and assisting residents in affected communities.
Mercado also recognized the contributions of Red Cross volunteers and staff to public health and emergency response efforts.
The response highlights the importance of coordination between government health agencies and humanitarian organizations during disasters, particularly when flooding disrupts communities and increases pressure on medical facilities.
The Red Cross said it will continue coordinating with the Department of Health and other partners in providing emergency assistance and health services to affected Filipinos.
