Singapore Manufacturing Output Surges 15.4% in August as AI Demand Drives Electronics and Precision Engineering

Singapore’s manufacturing sector delivered a sharp acceleration in August, with factory output rising 15.4% year on year as strong demand for artificial intelligence-related technology boosted electronics and precision engineering.

The increase more than doubled July’s 6.8% growth and marked a broad-based expansion across most manufacturing clusters. Excluding biomedical manufacturing, output climbed 17% in August, compared with 8.2% growth in July.

The electronics cluster was one of the main drivers, expanding 28.5% from a year earlier. Production of servers, semiconductors and data-storage products increased amid continued demand linked to artificial intelligence infrastructure.

Precision engineering performed even more strongly, growing 33.9%. The machinery and systems segment led the expansion, helped by higher production of semiconductor manufacturing equipment.

Transport engineering also posted solid growth of 9.5%, while general manufacturing increased 1.5%. Biomedical manufacturing edged up 0.4%.

The chemicals cluster was the only major exception, contracting 12.7%. The decline was linked to weaker production in the petroleum and petrochemical segments. Petroleum output was affected by plant maintenance, while petrochemical production remained constrained by softer demand and disruptions in feedstock supplies. The speciality chemicals segment nevertheless recorded growth, supported by higher production of industrial gases and food additives.

The monthly figures also show that the headline surge was not entirely uniform. On a seasonally adjusted month-on-month basis, overall manufacturing output fell 0.5% in August after rising 2.3% in July. When biomedical manufacturing was excluded, however, output increased 5.8% month on month.

The latest figures extend a strong run for Singapore’s manufacturing industry in 2026. Manufacturing expanded 12.2% year on year in the second quarter, with electronics and precision engineering again providing much of the momentum because of demand for semiconductors and semiconductor equipment.

The strength of electronics demand is particularly significant because Singapore has become an important production and investment hub for semiconductors and advanced technology. The sector’s August performance suggests that spending on AI-related infrastructure continues to generate demand for the hardware needed to power data centres and computing systems.

At the same time, manufacturers continue to face risks from supply-chain disruptions, energy costs and geopolitical tensions. Earlier manufacturing surveys had shown that Singaporean factories were dealing with longer delivery times and higher input costs even as AI-related demand strengthened.

The latest production figures therefore present a mixed picture beneath the headline growth: technology-driven industries are expanding rapidly, while chemicals and other parts of the industrial base remain exposed to supply and demand pressures.

For Singapore’s broader economy, the manufacturing rebound is important because the sector remains closely tied to exports, investment and external demand. Strong electronics production can also support related industries ranging from logistics and precision equipment to advanced engineering and business services.

The next monthly manufacturing report is scheduled for release on Oct. 26. Until then, the key question for businesses and investors will be whether the exceptional August growth can be sustained as AI-related demand remains strong while energy, supply-chain and geopolitical risks continue to weigh on manufacturers.
