Fans of Singapore’s beloved 1990s drama Growing Up are getting a major dose of nostalgia after several members of the original cast reunited three decades after the series first aired.
Actress Amy Cheng, who played Karen, the wife of eldest Tay son Gary, shared a photo from the Sept. 21 gathering featuring former actress Irin Gan, who portrayed daughter Vicky, along with Lim Kay Tong and Wee Soon Hui, who played Mr. and Mrs. Tay. Actor Ivan Tay and executive producer and director Ng Say Yong were also present.
Cheng described the reunion as an easy afternoon spent catching up, laughing and talking about work they still love. Her post quickly drew emotional reactions from viewers who remembered Growing Up as an important part of their childhood.
The six-season drama followed the fictional Tay family as Singapore changed from the 1960s through the 1980s. The series became one of the country’s best-known home-grown English-language dramas and ran for 128 episodes.
Gan’s appearance was particularly significant for longtime fans. She largely stepped away from the entertainment industry after leaving show business in 2003, making her reunion with her former onscreen parents a nostalgic moment for viewers.
The cast had previously reunited for an On the Red Dot special in 2021, although several members were absent. The latest gathering has once again prompted fans online to call for a larger reunion involving more of the Tay family.
Growing Up ended its run in 2001, but the renewed attention surrounding the cast shows how strongly the drama continues to resonate with the generation that watched it grow alongside Singapore’s television industry.
