24-Year-Old Singapore Muay Thai Fighter Dies After Fight for Hope Tournament

A 24-year-old Singaporean Muay Thai fighter has died after being taken unconscious to hospital following the AMC 13 – Fight for Hope tournament at the National Stadium on September 12.

Police confirmed the fighter’s death on September 28, saying a report had been lodged at around 8 a.m. on September 13 after the man was taken to hospital. Police did not identify him or disclose when he died. Preliminary investigations found no suspicion of foul play, while investigations remain ongoing.

The Singapore Civil Defence Force said it received a call for assistance at about 7:05 p.m. on September 12 at 1 Stadium Drive. One person was subsequently taken to Tan Tock Seng Hospital. Earlier reports said the fighter had suffered a head injury and was in critical condition in intensive care.

The Singapore Muaythai Association said the bout had been stopped by the referee during the third round in the interest of the fighter’s safety. The association also disputed reports that the athlete had been knocked out during the match, saying both fighters were present for the announcement of the result and left the ring without assistance.

A medical emergency occurred afterward, and the affected fighter was attended to by medical personnel at the venue before being transported to hospital. The association has launched a formal review and is working with relevant parties to establish the circumstances surrounding the incident.

The AMC 13 – Fight for Hope tournament was part of a Muay Thai festival organized in support of the Breast Cancer Foundation Singapore, with fundraising and awareness activities incorporated into the event.

The fighter’s death has prompted expressions of sympathy from members of Singapore’s Muay Thai community. National head coach Amir Gani urged the public to respect the family’s privacy and allow the ongoing review and investigation to establish what happened.

Authorities and the Singapore Muaythai Association have yet to announce further findings. Police investigations and the association’s formal review remain ongoing.
