A dangerous wager is about to shake Joseon society
SEOUL — Netflix is bringing a provocative new historical drama to screens this September, with “The Scandal” placing Son Ye-jin, Ji Chang-wook and NANA at the center of a dangerous game of desire, deception and betrayal in Joseon-era Korea.
The eight-episode series is scheduled to premiere globally on September 18, 2026, according to Netflix.
Directed by Jung Ji-woo, the drama reimagines the story behind the 2003 Korean film Untold Scandal, which itself drew from Pierre Choderlos de Laclos’ classic 1782 novel Dangerous Liaisons.
But this version is designed as more than a conventional historical romance.
It places ambition, attraction and personal freedom against a Joseon society governed by strict social expectations.
Son Ye-jin takes on a very different kind of heroine
Son Ye-jin plays Lady Cho, an intelligent and charismatic noblewoman whose abilities and ambitions extend well beyond the restrictions traditionally imposed on women of her position.
Rather than simply accepting the boundaries surrounding her, Lady Cho becomes the architect of a dangerous wager.
Netflix describes her as a strategist who proposes a game of seduction to Cho Won, setting the central conflict of the series in motion.
Her decision creates the chain of events that eventually pulls another woman into the increasingly complicated game.
At the September 9 production presentation in Seoul, Son Ye-jin explained that the character and the opportunity to work with director Jung Ji-woo were major reasons she chose the project. She also said she was interested in portraying a story centered on human desire within the restrictive social environment of Joseon.
Ji Chang-wook plays Joseon’s notorious playboy
Ji Chang-wook portrays Cho Won, described by Netflix as Joseon’s greatest playboy.
Cho Won is motivated by pleasure and excitement rather than conventional ideas of status or honor. When Lady Cho proposes her wager, he accepts the challenge — setting himself on a collision course with consequences neither character can fully control.
The newly released teasers emphasize the character’s confidence and fascination with the challenge.
But the wager becomes much more complicated when another woman enters the picture.
NANA becomes the unexpected center of the game
NANA plays Hui-yeon, a young widow who has vowed to remain chaste following the death of her husband.
She becomes entangled in Lady Cho and Cho Won’s scheme without initially understanding the full danger surrounding it.
That makes Hui-yeon more than a simple romantic rival.
Her involvement is what threatens to transform a private wager into a much larger web of deception, emotion and betrayal.
Recent promotional stills and teasers emphasize the contrasting personalities of the three characters — Lady Cho’s confidence, Cho Won’s pursuit of pleasure and Hui-yeon’s increasingly complicated emotions.
A classic story gets a Joseon makeover
“The Scandal” has a long creative lineage.
The original source is Laclos’ 1782 French novel Dangerous Liaisons, a story built around aristocratic manipulation and seduction.
The 2003 Korean movie Untold Scandal transferred those ideas into the Joseon period.
Netflix’s new series takes that foundation and expands it into an eight-episode drama, giving its characters more room to explore their motivations and relationships.
Director Jung Ji-woo has said he wanted to move beyond a straightforward romance and explore characters with a modern awareness of their own identities and desires.
That contemporary perspective is one of the most interesting aspects of the adaptation.
Bukchon becomes the stage for the scandal
The story unfolds among Joseon’s elite, with Bukchon serving as a major setting.
The promotional material presents the neighborhood as a world governed by strict social rules — making the characters’ secret decisions even more consequential.
Netflix’s latest teaser shows Lady Cho initiating the wager, Cho Won accepting the challenge and Hui-yeon becoming increasingly caught between them.
The result is a story where a seemingly private game threatens to disrupt an entire social circle.
Why the series is generating attention
Part of the anticipation comes from the unusual combination of its cast.
Son Ye-jin returns to a historical setting after a lengthy break from the genre, while Ji Chang-wook takes on a character dramatically different from many of his recent roles.
NANA, meanwhile, adds another layer to the central triangle as Hui-yeon.
The production also arrives at a time when Korean historical dramas continue to attract international audiences through streaming platforms.
