Taiwan Army Holds Tianma Exercise in Hsinchu as Defense Training Intensifies

Taiwan Army puts readiness in focus with Tianma exercise

HSINCHU, Taiwan — Taiwan’s Army has conducted the Tianma exercise in Hsinchu as part of its continuing effort to strengthen battlefield readiness and test troops under realistic conditions.

The exercise was held at the Kengzikou training range in Hsinchu, according to recent Taiwanese reports. The drill is part of a broader series of military training activities designed to improve the armed forces’ ability to respond to potential threats.

Recent footage and reporting showed Army units conducting a live-fire training scenario centered on responding to an amphibious landing.

The exercise comes shortly after Taiwan completed its 42nd Han Kuang military exercise, the island’s largest annual defense drill, which this year emphasized increasingly realistic scenarios and the ability of military units to operate under pressure.

Why Hsinchu matters

Hsinchu is best known internationally as one of Taiwan’s major technology and semiconductor centers, but the region also contains important military training facilities.

The Kengzikou range has been used for Army training, including exercises designed to test units under simulated combat conditions.

The location gives the drills an additional strategic context because northern Taiwan contains critical population centers, transportation infrastructure and technology-related economic assets.

Tianma is part of a broader readiness push

The Tianma exercise should not be viewed in isolation.

Taiwan’s military has increasingly emphasized realistic, distributed and sustained training, reflecting concerns about how its forces would operate during a major security crisis.

The approach was particularly visible during this year’s Han Kuang exercise. Business Insider reported that the 2026 drills moved beyond traditional large-scale demonstrations toward scenarios involving logistics, smaller-unit engagements, urban environments and other stresses intended to test Taiwan’s overall resilience.

The objective is not simply to demonstrate military equipment, but to determine whether units can maintain readiness under difficult circumstances.

Amphibious-defense scenarios remain a focus

The Tianma exercise included training associated with responding to an amphibious landing, according to Taiwanese reporting.

Such scenarios are significant because Taiwan’s geography makes the possibility of an amphibious assault an important consideration in its defense planning.

However, military exercises are training events rather than predictions that an attack is imminent.

Taiwan regularly conducts drills to prepare its forces for a range of contingencies, particularly as military pressure and activity around the Taiwan Strait remain a continuing security concern.

A changing approach to military exercises

Taiwan’s recent drills increasingly emphasize realistic conditions rather than ceremonial displays.

The 2026 Han Kuang exercise, for example, was conducted over 10 days and nine nights and included scenarios designed to test how Taiwan’s military and civilian systems might function during a prolonged crisis.

That broader approach provides context for the Tianma exercise.

Rather than treating individual drills as isolated events, Taiwan’s military is using a series of exercises to assess readiness across different environments and circumstances.

Taiwan faces a complex security environment

The exercises take place against a backdrop of continuing tensions between Taiwan and China.

Beijing claims Taiwan as part of China and has not ruled out the use of force to bring the island under its control. Taiwan’s government rejects Beijing’s sovereignty claims and continues to strengthen its defense capabilities.

Taiwan’s military exercises therefore attract significant attention both domestically and internationally.

At the same time, officials have repeatedly described the drills as part of routine defense preparation and readiness.

What Tianma signals

The latest exercise underscores a central theme of Taiwan’s current defense policy: readiness through repeated training.

For the military, the value of exercises such as Tianma lies in identifying weaknesses, improving coordination and ensuring personnel are prepared to respond to rapidly changing circumstances.

For observers, the drills provide another indication that Taiwan is continuing to place a strong emphasis on preparedness as regional security tensions remain elevated.

The Tianma exercise may be only one component of Taiwan’s wider training calendar, but its appearance in Hsinchu highlights how the island is continuing to test its forces across different locations and scenarios.

For Taiwan, the message is less about a single exercise and more about maintaining readiness long before a real crisis ever begins.
