A Swedish top-flight football match produced an extraordinary goal fest after a goalless first half, with Brommapojkarna edging AIK 6-5 in a dramatic finish that saw the winning goal arrive with virtually the last kick of the game.
The Allsvenskan clash in Stockholm on Saturday (Oct 10) appeared uneventful at the break, with neither side finding the net in the opening 45 minutes. But the second half delivered 11 goals, setting a league record for the most goals scored after halftime in a single match.
Brommapojkarna ultimately claimed all three points, but only after watching a commanding lead disappear and surviving a remarkable AIK comeback.
From 0-0 to a goal-scoring frenzy
The scoring began in the second half, with the two teams trading goals in a match that quickly spiralled into chaos.
Brommapojkarna built a 5-1 advantage, putting themselves in a seemingly comfortable position. AIK, however, refused to give up and mounted a stunning comeback that brought the score level at 5-5.
Johan Hove scored in the 97th minute to equalise, giving AIK hope of salvaging a point after falling four goals behind.
But the drama was not over.
Last-minute winner breaks AIK hearts
Just 90 seconds after Hove’s equaliser, Mads Kristian Hansen struck for Brommapojkarna in the ninth minute of stoppage time.
His late goal restored Brommapojkarna’s lead and secured a 6-5 victory, ending one of the most remarkable matches in recent Swedish league history.
The result was particularly painful for AIK, who had fought back from a seemingly hopeless position only to concede again moments after drawing level.
The match also highlighted how quickly football fortunes can change, even when a team appears to have a game under control.
A rare spectacle in European football
The fixture involved two midtable sides in Sweden’s 16-team Allsvenskan, with AIK sitting ninth and Brommapojkarna 11th before the match.
An 11-goal second half is exceptionally rare in top-flight European football. One notable historical comparison came in Germany in November 1982, when Borussia Dortmund beat Arminia Bielefeld 11-1 after scoring 10 goals in the second half.
English football has also witnessed extraordinary scoring bursts. In November 2009, Tottenham Hotspur defeated Wigan Athletic 9-1, with Jermain Defoe scoring five goals, including a hat-trick in seven minutes, during the second half.
Brommapojkarna’s 6-5 victory over AIK now adds another extraordinary chapter to football’s catalogue of unlikely comebacks, dramatic finishes and goal-scoring records.
For spectators, what began as a quiet 0-0 contest became a match packed with momentum swings and last-minute heartbreak — a reminder that in football, the final whistle can never come soon enough.
