A Singapore repair company is treating its employees to a Royal Caribbean cruise after a playful social media challenge dramatically exceeded its target.
Repair.sg challenged three of its workers to gather 5,000 likes on an Instagram video in exchange for a fully paid cruise. The video, posted on Sept. 28, showed the employees dancing and asking viewers to help them reach the goal.
The response was far greater than expected. Within 24 hours, the video had attracted more than 18,000 likes, nearly 300,000 views and hundreds of comments, taking the campaign to more than three times its original target.
Repair.sg co-founder and chief operating officer Amos Chew, 24, confirmed that the reward will go ahead, with the company’s entire team of about 30 people set to join the cruise in November.
The group includes local and foreign workers employed as plumbers, electricians, air-conditioning technicians and other repair specialists. Chew said the company has always considered itself a close-knit team, and the social media challenge was created spontaneously while the business was moving offices.
The video was filmed in less than 30 minutes after one of the workers suggested making a similar clip. The team then turned the idea into a light-hearted challenge during a short break from work.
Chew said the company chose a cruise because it wanted to give its employees a memorable experience and something different from previous outings. The team had previously visited Genting Highlands and Universal Studios Singapore.
The viral response has also sparked plenty of enthusiasm among viewers, with commenters urging the company’s boss to keep his promise and some already looking forward to seeing the workers’ cruise vlog.
What began as a quick social media experiment has therefore turned into a company-wide holiday, giving about 30 employees a Royal Caribbean cruise as an unexpected reward for their online popularity.
