The obstruction of justice complaint against Senator Robinhood “Robin” Padilla could become increasingly intertwined with the political tensions surrounding Vice President Sara Duterte’s ongoing impeachment trial, as the case places another Duterte ally under legal scrutiny.
Padilla appeared before the Department of Justice on September 25 for the preliminary investigation into allegations that he helped Senator Ronald “Bato” dela Rosa evade arrest when authorities attempted to serve an International Criminal Court warrant at the Senate in May. Prosecutors requested additional documents, while Padilla’s lawyers were given until November to submit their counter-affidavits. The next hearing is scheduled for October 9.
The complaint stems from Dela Rosa’s departure from the Senate premises while law enforcement authorities were attempting to locate and arrest him. Padilla has acknowledged giving Dela Rosa a ride but has denied wrongdoing and maintained that his actions were lawful. The Department of Justice is still evaluating the allegations and has not made a final determination on whether criminal charges should proceed.
Political analysts have suggested that the case could affect the broader political environment surrounding the impeachment proceedings. One analyst cited in the report said Padilla may use the complaint to reinforce his claim that he is being politically persecuted, while the case itself could further intensify tensions among figures connected to the Duterte camp.
Padilla is also among the senators who have not participated in the impeachment court’s recent vote concerning the threshold for convicting Duterte. The Senate impeachment court ruled on September 23 that only senators legally and factually capable of participating at the time of judgment should be included when calculating the required two-thirds vote.
Meanwhile, Duterte’s impeachment trial continues, with the Senate examining allegations involving unexplained wealth and business interests. The House prosecution has presented records involving corporate ties and government contracts as part of its case, while Duterte has continued to contest the allegations.
With Padilla’s obstruction case still under investigation and the impeachment trial ongoing, developments in either proceeding could have implications for the legal and political circumstances surrounding Duterte and her allies in the Senate.
