One of South America’s most famous natural wonders has suddenly become far more powerful.
Iguazu Falls, on the Brazil-Argentina border, is experiencing an extraordinary surge in water flow after heavy rainfall across the Iguazu River basin. On September 3, the falls were carrying about 7.75 million liters of water per second — more than five times the historical average of roughly 1.5 million liters per second.
The dramatic conditions have transformed the normally spectacular waterfalls into an even more intense scene, with enormous volumes of water, heavy spray and powerful currents attracting the attention of visitors and photographers.
The Taipei Times published a Reuters photograph of tourists visiting the Brazilian side of Iguazu Falls on September 2 as the river’s flow climbed sharply.
The numbers behind the spectacular surge
The increase has been remarkable.
On September 2, the flow exceeded 8.3 million liters per second, reaching approximately 8.37 million liters per second at one point, according to reports citing measurements from Paraná’s power utility Copel.
By September 3, the flow had eased somewhat to approximately 7.75 million liters per second — but remained more than five times the usual average.
For perspective, the long-term average flow is about 1.5 million liters per second.
That means the falls were handling roughly 6.25 million more liters every second than their historical average during the September 3 measurement.
Heavy rain upstream is driving the dramatic change
The spectacular increase isn’t being caused simply by rain falling directly at the waterfalls.
The key factor is rainfall throughout the Iguazu River basin, particularly in Paraná state in southern Brazil.
Water from the much larger basin eventually reaches the falls, meaning substantial rainfall upstream can cause the waterfall’s flow to increase dramatically even when conditions immediately around the tourist site appear relatively normal.
Reports have also pointed to a possible influence from the El Niño climate phenomenon, although that should be described as a contributing possibility rather than the sole confirmed cause.
The falls remain open — but authorities are watching closely
Despite the unusually powerful flow, tourist facilities on the Brazilian side remained open as of September 3.
The walkway providing views toward Devil’s Throat, along with the Cataratas Trail and other attractions, remained accessible under continued monitoring.
The situation is being monitored by Urbia+Cataratas, the company responsible for tourism operations at Brazil’s Iguazu National Park, together with Brazil’s Chico Mendes Institute for Biodiversity Conservation (ICMBio).
That monitoring is important because the falls can become dangerous when water volumes rise sharply.
Reports say access is generally restricted when the flow approaches approximately 9 million liters per second, depending on weather and safety conditions.
The danger threshold is getting closer
The September 2 peak of approximately 8.37 million liters per second was still below the reported 9-million-liter-per-second level at which closures may be considered.
But the difference was relatively small.
That is why authorities are monitoring the river in real time rather than treating the spectacular conditions simply as a tourism attraction.
The current situation is particularly notable because the flow has been climbing since around August 31, according to Brazilian reports.
Iguazu is one waterfall system — two countries
Iguazu Falls stretches across the border between Brazil and Argentina, with national parks and tourism infrastructure on both sides.
The Brazilian side offers views of the enormous waterfall system, while Argentina provides extensive walkways and viewpoints, including access toward Devil’s Throat.
Recent reports indicate that tourist circuits on the Argentine side were also operating despite the high water levels, while authorities continued monitoring conditions.
A wider weather story may be unfolding
The surge at Iguazu is also part of a broader pattern of unusually wet conditions in Paraná.
Folha reported that 44 of Paraná’s 47 meteorological stations recorded above-average rainfall during August, with the state also experiencing other severe-weather events.
That provides important context: the extraordinary waterfall flow isn’t an isolated phenomenon occurring at the falls themselves. It is the downstream result of conditions affecting a much larger river basin.
Why the images are going viral
The combination of huge water volumes, brown torrents, mist and rainbows has produced spectacular scenes.
Reuters photographed tourists at the falls on September 2, while its September 3 roundup of unusual images highlighted Iguazu’s dramatically increased water volume.
The visual impact is striking — but the underlying story is about extreme water flow and changing weather conditions, not simply a scenic attraction.
What happens next?
The crucial question is whether the river continues rising.
At 7.75 million liters per second, Iguazu was still well above normal on September 3, but below the previous day’s peak.
If additional heavy rainfall reaches the basin, the flow could rise again and potentially approach levels at which visitor access becomes restricted.
For now, the Brazilian side remains open under monitoring.
But the numbers show just how quickly conditions at one of the world’s most famous waterfalls can change.
A waterfall that normally moves around 1.5 million liters of water every second is currently handling several times that amount — turning Iguazu into one of the most dramatic natural spectacles in South America this week.
