Smart Gives Filipinos in Saudi Arabia Free Roaming Data and Calls Amid Middle East War — But a Bigger Safety Crisis Could Put Thousands of OFWs at Risk

MANILA, Philippines — As the escalating Middle East conflict raises security concerns across Saudi Arabia, Smart Communications and PLDT Global are extending free telecommunications services to help Filipinos stay connected with their families and access emergency assistance.

Smart is offering eligible subscribers 1 gigabyte (1GB) of free roaming data valid for five days, while PLDT Global is providing free calls to eligible Philippine numbers and government assistance hotlines through its Tindahan ni Bossing (TinBo) platform.

The initiative comes as overseas Filipino workers (OFWs) face growing uncertainty amid regional hostilities, security warnings and aviation disruptions.

Smart Offers Free Roaming Data to Filipinos in Saudi Arabia

For thousands of Filipino families separated by overseas employment, staying connected during an emergency can provide reassurance and access to essential information.

Smart’s free 1GB roaming allocation is designed to help eligible subscribers communicate through messaging applications, access official advisories and maintain contact with loved ones in the Philippines.

The package is valid for five days, subject to eligibility and roaming network availability.

Meanwhile, PLDT Global is offering free calling services through its TinBo platform for Filipinos using a Smart Virtual Number.

The service allows eligible users to contact Philippine mobile numbers, PLDT landlines and designated government assistance hotlines.

PLDT Global President and CEO Albert V. Villa-Real emphasized the importance of maintaining communication channels for overseas Filipinos during the crisis.

The telecommunications support is intended to help affected Filipinos obtain assistance and remain connected with their families while authorities monitor regional developments.

Free Calls to Emergency Hotlines Offer Additional Support

Beyond everyday family communication, the initiative includes access to important Philippine government hotlines.

These include:

  • 1348 — Migrant Workers Assistance Hotline, which provides support for overseas Filipino workers needing assistance.
  • 1343 — Anti-Human Trafficking Hotline, which handles trafficking-related concerns and requests for assistance.

The availability of these services could prove particularly important for Filipinos experiencing employment difficulties, travel disruptions or urgent safety concerns.

However, emergency telecommunications assistance does not necessarily indicate that mandatory evacuation measures have been announced for Saudi Arabia.

Filipinos are advised to follow official announcements from the Philippine Embassy in Riyadh, the Philippine Consulate General in Jeddah and relevant Saudi authorities.

How Filipinos in Saudi Arabia Can Access Smart’s Free Services

Eligible Smart subscribers can check their roaming benefits through Smart’s official GigaRoam platform.

For free calls through PLDT Global, eligible Filipinos can use their Smart Virtual Number and the supported TinBo calling service.

Subscribers should verify their eligibility, package validity and available roaming coverage before depending on these services during an emergency.

Saudi Arabia Security Concerns Intensify Amid Regional Conflict

The telecommunications initiative comes against the backdrop of serious security developments in Saudi Arabia.

According to Reuters, missile and drone attacks targeting Riyadh’s King Khalid International Airport resulted in casualties and major disruptions to aviation operations.

The incidents heightened concerns among foreign nationals, including Filipinos working and residing in the kingdom.

Separate Philippine media reports indicated that four Filipinos were injured during the October 10 airport attack, with three reportedly remaining in intensive care as of October 12.

The Philippine Embassy in Riyadh and the Consulate General in Jeddah have urged Filipino nationals to remain vigilant, avoid potentially dangerous locations and follow official security instructions.

Such developments underscore why reliable communication and access to government assistance are increasingly important for Filipinos overseas.

Philippine Government Continues Monitoring OFW Safety

Despite worsening regional security concerns, Philippine authorities had not announced a general suspension of Filipino worker deployment to Saudi Arabia as of October 12.

The Department of Migrant Workers said deployment was continuing while officials monitored developments and coordinated with other government agencies.

However, travelers were encouraged to verify airline schedules because of disruptions affecting flights and airport operations.

The Philippine government’s response highlights the delicate balance between maintaining overseas employment opportunities and ensuring the safety of Filipino workers in areas affected by conflict.

Globe and Other Telecom Companies Have Also Provided Emergency Assistance

Smart and PLDT Global are not the only Philippine telecommunications providers to have introduced emergency communication support during the broader Middle East crisis.

Earlier in 2026, PLDT Home temporarily waived qualifying international calling charges for subscribers contacting several Middle Eastern countries.

Globe Telecom also introduced emergency roaming assistance in selected Gulf countries, including free mobile data, calling minutes and text messages for eligible subscribers.

DITO Telecommunity similarly announced limited incoming-call assistance for eligible customers roaming in selected Middle Eastern markets.

Those earlier initiatives demonstrate how telecommunications companies can support overseas Filipinos when international crises threaten normal communication.

However, subscribers should verify which emergency offers remain active, as previous promotional benefits may already have expired.

Why Free Communication Matters During International Emergencies

For many Filipino families, international communication costs can become an additional burden during an emergency.

Workers may need to contact relatives repeatedly, request government assistance, coordinate temporary accommodation or monitor evacuation instructions.

Even limited complimentary mobile data can help affected individuals access messaging services, government websites and emergency advisories.

Free calling services can also help reduce the cost of contacting relatives and assistance hotlines.

Nevertheless, communications support is only one part of a broader emergency response.

Filipinos facing immediate danger may still require safe shelter, medical attention, transportation assistance or government-coordinated evacuation arrangements.

Bigger Challenge: Protecting Filipinos as Middle East Tensions Continue

Smart’s latest initiative offers practical assistance for Filipinos caught in an increasingly uncertain regional environment.

But the continuing Middle East conflict raises broader concerns about the long-term safety of migrant workers, transportation disruptions and the ability of authorities to respond quickly if security conditions deteriorate.

For the Philippines, which has a substantial overseas workforce across the Gulf region, developments in Saudi Arabia carry significant humanitarian and economic implications.

The situation also highlights the importance of emergency preparedness, dependable telecommunications networks and coordinated diplomatic assistance.

PLDT Global and Smart have indicated that they are continuing to monitor developments and may extend additional assistance as circumstances require.

For overseas Filipino workers and their families, the immediate priority remains clear: staying informed, maintaining communication and obtaining reliable assistance when necessary.

As Smart extends a free digital lifeline to Filipinos in Saudi Arabia, one question remains: Will emergency communication be enough if the Middle East conflict escalates further?
