SINGAPORE — A 36-year-old Malaysian motorcyclist was taken to hospital after his motorcycle collided with a tipper truck along the Bukit Timah Expressway (BKE) on Thursday afternoon (Oct. 8).
The accident occurred at about 4.50pm on the BKE towards Woodlands, according to Singapore police and the Singapore Civil Defence Force (SCDF). The motorcyclist was conscious when taken to Woodlands Hospital and is assisting with ongoing police investigations.
Motorcycle found lying between expressway lanes
Photographs shared on Facebook by SG Road Vigilante showed a Malaysia-registered motorcycle lying on its side between the two rightmost lanes of the expressway.
The motorcyclist was seen standing beside the fallen motorcycle, with an apparent injury to his leg. A tipper truck had stopped ahead of the motorcycle, and broken vehicle parts were visible on the road between them.
The available reports did not establish how the collision occurred or which vehicle was responsible. Police investigations are ongoing.
Motorcyclists remain vulnerable road users
The accident comes amid continuing concerns about motorcycle safety on Singapore roads, particularly along expressways frequently used by cross-border commuters.
In 2025, Singapore recorded 1,372 injury-causing and fatal accidents involving foreign-registered motorcycles. Of these, 31 were fatal accidents, while 1,341 involved injuries.
Motorcycles accounted for about 15 per cent of Singapore’s vehicle population, but motorcyclists and pillion riders were involved in 54.8 per cent of traffic accidents and accounted for 53 per cent of traffic fatalities in 2025, according to figures cited by the Traffic Police.
The most commonly identified contributing factors in motorcycle accidents included failure to keep a proper lookout, inadequate control of the vehicle and changing lanes without due care. These are general road-safety findings and do not establish the cause of this particular crash.
Authorities step up enforcement along BKE and SLE
Singapore authorities have also increased enforcement at accident-prone stretches of the BKE and Seletar Expressway (SLE).
In an April 2026 parliamentary response, Coordinating Minister for National Security and Minister for Home Affairs K. Shanmugam said the Traffic Police had intensified enforcement at accident-prone locations along both expressways. The Traffic Police and Land Transport Authority had also introduced targeted road-calming measures, including speed-regulating strips along the BKE.
Authorities said they would continue reviewing whether additional measures were needed.
Police investigations continue
The motorcyclist was taken to Woodlands Hospital while conscious. Police have confirmed that he is assisting with investigations, but further details about his condition and the circumstances of the collision have not been publicly disclosed.
For now, the cause of the crash remains undetermined. The investigation will establish the circumstances surrounding the collision and whether any traffic offences were committed.
