Qatar is intensifying its mediation efforts between the United States and Iran, with officials saying shuttle diplomacy could help the two sides find common ground and move toward an agreement to end their conflict.
Qatari officials said they have been exchanging messages with both Washington and Tehran and holding meetings aimed at bridging differences. Qatar’s Foreign Ministry said the immediate focus includes finding a peaceful solution and restoring freedom of navigation through the Strait of Hormuz.
The diplomatic push follows an Iranian proposal calling for the Strait of Hormuz to be reopened within seven days in exchange for US steps including lifting its naval blockade, easing oil sanctions and releasing frozen Iranian funds. The proposal also calls for a ceasefire and renewed negotiations over Iran’s nuclear program.
US officials have indicated that Washington remains open to negotiations but wants Iran’s nuclear program addressed as part of any potential agreement. The two sides remain divided over the timing of commitments and which measures should come first.
Qatar’s mediation has included separate contacts with US and Iranian representatives. Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi met with Qatari mediators in New York, while officials continued exchanging proposals through intermediaries.
The Strait of Hormuz remains a central issue in the negotiations because disruptions there have affected international shipping and energy markets. The prolonged conflict has also placed pressure on Iran’s economy while contributing to higher global energy prices.
Despite the renewed diplomatic activity, significant obstacles remain. Qatar itself acknowledged that the negotiations face difficulties, while US officials have expressed skepticism about whether Tehran will accept the conditions Washington considers necessary for a lasting agreement.
For now, the talks remain indirect, with Qatar and other mediators carrying messages between the two governments. Further negotiations will determine whether the latest diplomatic effort can produce a ceasefire, reopen the Strait of Hormuz and establish a framework for addressing the nuclear dispute.
