A 22-year-old construction worker has died after falling from height at a Build-To-Order housing project in Tanjong Rhu, Singapore, prompting the suspension of all work at the site while authorities investigate.
The fatal accident happened on Sept. 28 at the Tanjong Rhu Riverfront II construction site along Tanjong Rhu Road. The worker was reportedly involved in concreting works when the fall occurred.
Emergency responders were called to the construction site at about 4.20pm. A Singapore Civil Defence Force paramedic pronounced the worker dead at the scene.
The Housing & Development Board confirmed the fatality and said the worker had fallen from height during concreting operations. HDB expressed condolences to the worker’s family and said it would work with the main contractor, BHCC Construction Singapore, to provide assistance to them.
HDB has suspended all works at the site until further notice. The agency said it takes the incident seriously and is assisting authorities with the ongoing investigation, while emphasizing that workplace safety remains a priority.
Initial observations at the site indicated that the accident occurred during concreting work involving a concrete pump truck. A concrete pump truck uses a hydraulic system and extended boom to move freshly mixed concrete to construction areas.
Police said preliminary investigations found no indication of foul play. The circumstances surrounding the fall remain under investigation.
The incident comes as Singapore’s construction sector continues to face scrutiny over workplace safety. Official figures cited in the latest reports showed the sector’s annualised fatal and major injury rate falling from 27.6 cases per 100,000 workers in the first half of 2025 to 24.1 in the first half of 2026. The number of fatal and major injuries also declined from 75 to 69 over the same periods.
The Tanjong Rhu death also follows another fatal construction accident in Singapore earlier in September, when two workers died after a work platform was dislodged from a crane at Tuas Port.
Under Singapore’s legal framework, workplace fatalities and other unnatural deaths are subject to investigation by the authorities. The findings from the ongoing investigation will determine the circumstances that led to the worker’s death.
For the Tanjong Rhu Riverfront II project, construction will remain suspended while investigators examine the accident. The case also puts renewed attention on the risks faced by workers performing concreting and other activities at height on major housing projects.
The tragedy is a reminder that even as workplace injury rates improve, construction remains a high-risk industry where a single accident can have devastating consequences for workers and their families.
