As dozens of world leaders gathered in New York for the United Nations General Assembly, US President Donald Trump made an unexpected stop at Gracie Mansion on Monday, Sept. 21, for an hourlong meeting with New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani.
The meeting took place as Trump prepared for his address to the UN General Assembly and a packed schedule of discussions with foreign leaders. Reuters reported that nearly 130 world leaders were gathering in New York for the annual diplomatic event, with Trump scheduled to hold bilateral meetings during his two-day visit.
Rather than focusing on international affairs, however, Trump’s meeting with Mamdani centered largely on New York City issues, including housing and affordability.
The two discussed the proposed redevelopment of Sunnyside Yards in Queens, a major project that could eventually create thousands of homes and tens of thousands of jobs. Mamdani said the city and federal government had agreed to improve coordination between their teams as the project moves forward.
Trump said the redevelopment has been discussed for decades and would likely require federal approvals and funding. He also said housing for low- and moderate-income residents should form a substantial part of the development.
The meeting marked the third time Trump and Mamdani have met and the first time the president has visited Mamdani at Gracie Mansion since Mamdani became mayor.
Their relationship has attracted considerable attention because of their significant political and policy differences. Trump is a Republican president, while Mamdani is a Democratic Socialist mayor who has previously criticized several policies of the Trump administration.
Despite those differences, the two have maintained communication and have repeatedly discussed areas where the federal government and New York City could cooperate.
After Monday’s meeting, Trump spoke positively about Mamdani’s early tenure and said he hoped the mayor would succeed. Mamdani, meanwhile, emphasized that he was prepared to work with anyone if it could produce tangible benefits for New Yorkers.
The pair also faced questions about press access after several news organizations had their White House access restricted. Mamdani said he believed members of the press should be allowed to attend events at Gracie Mansion regardless of whether their coverage was favorable or critical.
The timing of the meeting made it particularly notable. Trump was in New York for one of the year’s most important diplomatic gatherings, with foreign leaders arriving for discussions involving conflicts, trade, security and other international issues.
Yet before turning fully to those global matters, the president spent part of his UN visit discussing housing and the cost of living in America’s largest city.
For Mamdani, the meeting provided another opportunity to pursue federal cooperation on major New York projects. For Trump, it demonstrated that his UN trip also involved domestic priorities and his relationship with the city’s new mayor.
With Trump’s meetings with foreign leaders and his UN address still ahead, attention now shifts from the unusual Gracie Mansion encounter to the broader diplomatic agenda unfolding in New York.
