A Korean fantasy series built around one of the strangest routes to becoming overpowered is officially making the jump to television.
SSS-Class Revival Hunter, the popular Korean web novel and webcomic about a bottom-ranked hunter whose extraordinary ability only works when he dies, will receive a TV anime adaptation beginning in January 2027.
And Filipino anime fans will be able to watch it legally.
Crunchyroll has confirmed that it will stream the series in the Philippines, alongside Indonesia, Malaysia, Singapore, the Indian subcontinent and numerous territories across the Americas, Europe, Africa, Oceania and the Middle East.
The announcement arrived with the anime’s first teaser visual and promotional video, giving audiences an early look at protagonist Kim Gongja and the mysterious Sword Emperor.
But the premise behind Gongja’s rise makes this far more unusual than another straightforward power-fantasy story.
A hero who has to die to use his greatest power
The story unfolds around a mysterious Tower populated by dangerous monsters and Hunters competing for fame, fortune and status.
Gongja begins at the opposite end of that hierarchy.
He’s an F-rank Hunter, frustrated by his own lack of success while watching elite Hunters — particularly the top-ranked Flame Emperor — receive the recognition he desperately wants.
Then Gongja finally acquires an extraordinarily rare copying skill.
There’s just one rather serious problem.
The ability activates when he is killed.
The official anime site reveals another major piece of Gongja’s unusual arsenal: after copying an ability from the Flame Emperor, he gains the power to return to 24 hours before his death whenever he dies. That turns death itself into both his greatest weakness and one of his most powerful strategic weapons.
It is this combination of tower-climbing fantasy, regression and repeated death that has helped distinguish SSS-Class Revival Hunter from many titles occupying the increasingly crowded Hunter genre.
Who will voice Kim Gongja?
Two major Japanese voice actors have already been announced.
Takeo Otsuka will voice Kim Gongja, while Satoshi Hino will portray the Sword Emperor, the former elite Hunter who becomes Gongja’s ghostly companion.
Otsuka has become increasingly recognizable to anime audiences through roles including Jinshi in The Apothecary Diaries, while Hino is widely known for characters including Kyojuro Rengoku in Demon Slayer: Kimetsu no Yaiba.
The Sword Emperor is particularly important because the partnership between him and Gongja becomes one of the foundations of the story rather than simply another mentor-and-student pairing.
Who is making the SSS-Class Revival Hunter anime?
The production has also assembled an experienced creative team.
Hiroaki Sakurai, whose directing credits include The Disastrous Life of Saiki K., will direct the series at STUDIO fu.
Sayuri Oba is handling the script, while veteran animator and designer Takahiro Yoshimatsu is responsible for character designs. The official site also lists HAYATE as producer.
Sakurai acknowledged the pressure of adapting a property that already has an international following, saying in comments published with the announcement that the original story had grown from a novel into a comic with fans around the world. Anime Corner reported that Sakurai said bringing Yoshimatsu aboard as character designer gave him greater confidence in the adaptation.
Oba, meanwhile, highlighted the series’ rapidly changing story and Gongja’s unusual method of repeatedly “dying and living again,” promising an unpredictable experience for both existing readers and newcomers.
The franchise was a novel before it became a webcomic
The upcoming anime is the latest evolution of a franchise that began years before its television adaptation.
The original Korean web novel was written by Sinnoa and first published in 2018. Its licensed English translation on Wuxiaworld is now complete at 400 chapters.
A webcomic adaptation followed in December 2020, with Neida credited for adaptation and Bill K for artwork. English readers can find the digital webcomic on Tapas, while Ize Press publishes an English print and digital edition.
Ize Press released the first English collected volume in October 2024, crediting Bill K for art, Neida for adaptation and Sinnoa for the original story.
The title has also built a substantial following in Japan.
According to the official anime website, the series began publication on Japanese digital manga and novel service Piccoma in 2022, has regularly ranked highly in its fantasy category and has accumulated more than 25 million “hearts” or likes there.
That established audience helps explain why an anime adaptation has been anticipated for some time.
Another Korean webcomic makes the anime leap
The announcement also comes as Korean web novels and webcomics continue expanding into Japanese animation.
The runaway international success of titles such as Solo Leveling has demonstrated how stories originating in South Korea’s webtoon ecosystem can move beyond their original readership and find massive global anime audiences.
That inevitably means SSS-Class Revival Hunter will face comparisons with other Hunter and tower-climbing stories.
But its central gimmick gives it a potentially important point of difference.
Gongja doesn’t simply unlock an unbeatable attack or instantly become the world’s strongest character.
His advantage comes at a brutal cost: death is part of the mechanism.
Each failure can therefore become information he can use the next time around — turning battles into puzzles where dying does not necessarily mean losing.
Can Filipino viewers watch it?
Yes.
This is one detail worth emphasizing because the phrase “worldwide excluding Asia” can initially make Crunchyroll announcements confusing for audiences in this region.
Crunchyroll’s confirmed territories specifically include the Philippines, Singapore, Malaysia and Indonesia, despite much of Asia otherwise being excluded from its global licensing announcement.
The anime is scheduled to begin in January 2027.
However, as of September 13, 2026, producers have not announced a specific premiere date, episode count, full supporting cast or complete music staff.
Those details are likely to become some of the next major announcements as the January premiere approaches.
Why this adaptation could be one to watch
On paper, SSS-Class Revival Hunter contains plenty of familiar ingredients: monsters, rankings, supernatural abilities, a mysterious Tower and a weak protagonist determined to reach the top.
But its appeal lies in what happens after that familiar setup.
Its hero’s shortcut to power is simultaneously a curse.
His ability to retry events creates seemingly limitless possibilities, yet every second chance carries a price that most protagonists would do almost anything to avoid.
For existing readers, the biggest question now is whether STUDIO fu can translate the webcomic’s action, emotional arcs and repeated-death mechanics successfully into animation.
For viewers encountering Gongja for the first time, however, the hook is much simpler:
How powerful can a Hunter become when death isn’t the end — but the beginning of his next move?
And in January 2027, anime audiences are finally going to find out.
