MANILA, Philippines — Senators Alan Peter Cayetano and Pia Cayetano have returned to the Philippines after a brief trip to Singapore that triggered intense public speculation and renewed attention on the investigations surrounding members of the prominent political family.
The Cayetano siblings arrived back in the country late Saturday night, September 12, following their short overseas trip, according to reports from The Manila Times and other Philippine news organizations. Following his return, Senate Minority Leader Alan Peter Cayetano called for unity and urged government officials to focus on governance and the country’s pressing concerns.
Their return came just days after the Bureau of Immigration confirmed that the two senators had left the Philippines. The agency said there were no hold departure orders or derogatory records against either Alan Peter or Pia Cayetano that would have legally prevented them from traveling abroad.
Singapore Trip Sparks Speculation
The timing of the trip quickly became the subject of public discussion because Alan Peter Cayetano has been linked to ongoing investigations, including issues related to the 2019 Southeast Asian Games and other allegations being examined by government authorities.
The National Bureau of Investigation has previously said it was reviewing potential complaints involving individuals connected to the Philippine Southeast Asian Games Organizing Committee, or PHISGOC. NBI Director Melvin Matibag said authorities were examining whether Alan Peter Cayetano could be included among potential respondents, while stressing that the investigation and review of evidence were ongoing.
Reports have also linked the timing of the Cayetanos’ travel to broader investigations involving alleged irregularities. However, leaving the country was not prohibited because no court-issued hold departure order or other legal restriction was in place at the time of their departure.
Alan Peter Cayetano: ‘We Just Wanted to Rest’
Alan Peter Cayetano has maintained that the Singapore trip was simply a personal break.
In a separate report, he said he and his family traveled to Singapore because they wanted to rest amid the pressure and controversy surrounding recent events.
Senate leaders also pointed out that senators are generally not required to seek permission from Senate leadership for personal trips abroad, provided the travel does not involve official Senate business or the use of Senate resources.
Pia Cayetano Says She Was Supporting the Philippine Team
Pia Cayetano, meanwhile, publicly addressed speculation about her own trip and denied claims that she was hiding.
The senator said she was in Singapore to support the Philippine national padel team and described the trip as a previously planned visit. Her explanation was also reported by the Philippine Daily Inquirer, GMA News, ABS-CBN News and The Manila Times.
Her statement helped fuel further discussion online, particularly because both siblings were out of the country at the same time.
Authorities Had Expected Their Return
Before their arrival, NBI Director Melvin Matibag had said authorities received information that the Cayetano siblings were expected to return to the Philippines over the weekend, either on September 12 or September 13.
The siblings ultimately returned late Saturday, ending several days of speculation over their whereabouts and travel plans.
