A citrus once pushed to the brink of disappearing in the wild is making an extraordinary comeback in Taiwan—and this time, its revival could open the door to new food, health and commercial applications while helping protect the traditional knowledge of the Saisiyat Indigenous people.
Known as Nanzhuang orange, or Citrus taiwanica, the rare citrus is endemic to Taiwan and has long been associated with the Saisiyat community in Miaoli County’s Nanzhuang Township. Its Saisiyat name, “Katayoe’” or “嘎達釉,” is described as meaning “food prepared by mother,” reflecting its longstanding place in community life. The species has been classified as critically endangered in the wild.
Now, Taiwan’s Forestry and Nature Conservation Agency has taken another major step: research into Nanzhuang orange has resulted in a patent covering applications involving processed material from the plant, with the technology being made available for use by the Saisiyat community.
Taiwan-based reports described the move as a first in the country for using a patent mechanism to protect Indigenous traditional knowledge and create a pathway for benefits to return to the community.
From a nearly vanished citrus to thousands of trees
The Nanzhuang orange’s story began with conservation rather than commerce.
The species had become extremely rare in the wild, with earlier restoration work relying on a very small number of surviving trees. A restoration program involving Taiwan’s forestry authorities, academic researchers and Saisiyat communities began working to propagate the plant and return it to its traditional habitat. Earlier conservation reporting said only a handful of wild trees remained when restoration efforts began.
The effort has since expanded dramatically.
Public broadcaster PTS reported that more than 5,000 Nanzhuang orange trees have now been planted back in the Nanzhuang area, giving the species a much stronger foothold while reconnecting it with Saisiyat cultural practices.
That represents a remarkable turnaround for a plant that had effectively disappeared from much of its traditional environment.
Scientists see possibilities beyond the fruit
Nanzhuang orange is not an ordinary table orange. Its fruit is known for a highly acidic, bitter and distinctive flavor, making it unsuitable for conventional fresh-fruit consumption but potentially valuable as a specialty ingredient.
Previous Taiwanese coverage has highlighted its potential in marmalade, sauces, baking, beverages, seasoning and other culinary applications. Its unusual flavor profile has even attracted international attention: Nanzhuang orange marmalade has received recognition at the World Marmalade Awards.
Researchers have also been investigating possible health-related applications.
A study commissioned by Taiwan’s forestry authorities and conducted with National Taiwan University researchers examined processed Nanzhuang orange material. Reports said laboratory/animal research found that a water extract showed potential for reducing indicators associated with pneumonia, leading to further interest in possible medical and health applications.
But an important distinction remains: this research does not mean Nanzhuang orange has been proven to treat or cure respiratory disease in humans. The reported findings are research results and potential applications, not an approved medical treatment.
Why the patent matters
The most significant part of the story may be the way Taiwan is handling ownership and benefit-sharing.
The Forestry and Nature Conservation Agency reportedly obtained the patent after consulting with the Saisiyat community, rather than treating the traditional knowledge surrounding the plant as simply an open commercial resource.
The patent concerns compositions containing processed Nanzhuang orange material and applications related to preventing or treating chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, according to Taiwanese agricultural reporting. The agency has subsequently moved toward licensing the technology for community use.
That creates a potentially important model: conservation, Indigenous knowledge and scientific research can be linked to economic benefits for the community that helped preserve the knowledge.
Taiwanese reporting has also pointed out that the country does not yet have a dedicated law specifically protecting all forms of Indigenous traditional intellectual property, making the patent-and-consent approach particularly significant.
A conservation story becomes an Indigenous economic opportunity
For the Saisiyat, however, Nanzhuang orange is much more than a rare botanical species.
Historical accounts describe the fruit as part of traditional food and medicinal practices, including drying and grinding the fruit for use when people were ill. It also has ceremonial significance within Saisiyat culture.
That means the restoration project is attempting to accomplish two things simultaneously: bring a threatened species back to the landscape and bring cultural knowledge back into everyday life.
The commercial possibilities are already emerging. Nanzhuang orange has been developed into products such as jams, baked goods and aromatic products, while researchers and conservation officials continue examining additional uses.
Under the planned licensing arrangement, the Saisiyat community is expected to have a role in developing these applications, with economic returns flowing back to the community.
Taiwan’s bigger biodiversity challenge
The Nanzhuang orange experiment also highlights a broader issue facing Taiwan: how to turn conservation of native species into sustainable local development without stripping away the cultural knowledge attached to those species.
Earlier restoration efforts described the plant as essentially disappearing from its wild habitat before conservationists and the Saisiyat worked to reintroduce it.
The latest patent initiative therefore marks a new phase.
The goal is no longer simply to count how many trees have survived. It is to establish whether a threatened native species can support food innovation, specialty agriculture, scientific research and Indigenous economic development while respecting the community’s traditional knowledge.
If that model succeeds, Nanzhuang orange could become an example of how biodiversity conservation can move beyond protecting plants in the forest—and instead help rebuild the cultural and economic systems surrounding them.
For a citrus that was once close to disappearing, its next chapter could be far bigger than survival.
It could become a blueprint for how Taiwan protects both biological diversity and Indigenous knowledge.
