Maynilad Cuts Water Losses to 31.5% as El Niño Threatens Supply

Maynilad Water Services, Inc. has reduced its non-revenue water (NRW) level to 31.5% in the first half of 2026, recovering more than 150 million liters of water per day and strengthening its supply buffer ahead of potential El Niño-related constraints.

The West Zone water concessionaire said the improvement came from targeted leak repairs and the rehabilitation of tertiary, secondary, and primary pipelines across its service area. The recovered volume is equivalent to the output of a water treatment plant and could meet the daily water requirements of around 770,000 people.

NRW refers to water that enters the distribution system but is not billed to customers, including water lost through leaks as well as commercial losses. Maynilad’s average NRW fell from 36.7% in the first half of 2025 to 31.5% during the same period this year.

The company said reducing losses is particularly important as possible El Niño conditions could tighten water availability. Recovering water already within the network allows more supply to reach customers without requiring an equivalent increase in water production.

Maynilad has allocated P7.7 billion for its 2026 NRW management program. The spending covers pipe and meter replacement, active leakage control, the establishment and maintenance of district metered areas, and network diagnostic activities.

The company is targeting an NRW level of 25% by 2027 under its business plan approved by the Metropolitan Waterworks and Sewerage System. Based on its current progress, Maynilad expects to end 2026 at around 25% NRW and achieve a 29% average for the full year.

The latest reduction comes as Maynilad continues investing heavily in its water and wastewater infrastructure. Its first-half 2026 capital expenditures reached P12.89 billion, up 18.9% from the previous year, supporting network efficiency, reliability, water service improvements, and expanded wastewater coverage.

The reduction in water losses provides an additional source of supply for Maynilad’s customers while the company prepares for possible weather-driven pressures on water resources later this year.
