A 33-year-old man has been arrested for allegedly driving under the influence of drugs after a two-vehicle accident in Ang Mo Kio in the early hours of Sept. 22.
The accident, involving a taxi and a car, happened at about 1.45am along Ang Mo Kio Avenue 5 towards Buangkok Green. Images from the scene showed the black car stopped across two lanes, with debris scattered on the road and its airbags deployed.
The driver was attended to by Singapore Civil Defence Force paramedics but reportedly declined to be taken to hospital. No other injuries were reported.
Police said a vaporiser and a pod were found in the man’s possession. The items were seized and referred to the Health Sciences Authority for further investigation. The man was subsequently arrested on suspicion of driving under the influence of drugs.
Authorities have not publicly confirmed what substance, if any, was detected in the driver’s system. Investigations are ongoing.
Under Singapore’s Road Traffic Act, driving under the influence of drugs can carry a fine of up to S$10,000, imprisonment of up to 12 months, or both. For a second or subsequent conviction, the maximum fine rises to S$20,000 and the jail term can be up to two years. Offenders may also be disqualified from driving all classes of vehicles.
The case comes amid continued enforcement against drug-impaired driving in Singapore. Earlier this month, police announced separate cases involving drivers allegedly impaired by etomidate, with vaporisers seized during investigations.
The Ang Mo Kio investigation remains ongoing, and the allegation against the driver has not been tested in court.
