A routine flight from Bangkok to Hong Kong reportedly turned into a police investigation after a passenger allegedly spotted a man going through another traveller’s bag and taking cash from it.
Hong Kong police arrested a 57-year-old Chinese national after the HK Express flight landed at Hong Kong International Airport on September 1, according to multiple reports.
The suspected theft involved approximately 25,000 Thai baht, equivalent to roughly HK$5,900–6,000. The man was arrested on suspicion of theft, and the investigation remains ongoing.
Passenger reportedly captures alleged theft on camera
The incident happened aboard HK Express flight UO703, which was travelling from Bangkok to Hong Kong and arrived at approximately 11:40 p.m. on September 1.
According to reports citing police and passenger accounts, the suspect had been sitting toward the rear of the aircraft before allegedly making his way toward the front cabin.
He reportedly opened an overhead luggage compartment and began going through a black bag belonging to another passenger.
One passenger became suspicious and reportedly recorded the incident on a mobile phone before alerting the cabin crew.
The cabin crew then located the owner of the bag and alerted authorities.
Police were waiting when the plane landed
Hong Kong police reportedly received the theft report at around 11:34 p.m., shortly before the aircraft arrived.
Officers boarded the plane after it landed and arrested the 57-year-old suspect.
Hong Kong media reports said police identified him as a mainland Chinese passport holder. The case was being handled as a suspected theft, with further investigation continuing.
The sequence of events meant that what allegedly began as suspicious activity inside the cabin ended with police officers boarding the aircraft after touchdown.
About 25,000 baht allegedly taken
The amount involved has been reported slightly differently by various outlets.
The South China Morning Post reported that police estimated the stolen foreign currency at nearly HK$6,000, while a source identified the amount as approximately 25,000 Thai baht, equivalent to about HK$5,885.
Hong Kong’s TVB News likewise reported that about 25,000 baht was allegedly taken from a black bag and that the suspect was arrested after the aircraft arrived.
Other Hong Kong reports have similarly put the alleged loss at around 25,000 baht.
The passenger’s quick reaction may have changed the outcome
One of the most striking elements of the case is the role reportedly played by another passenger.
Rather than simply confronting the suspect, the passenger allegedly documented what was happening and notified cabin crew.
That allowed the airline staff to identify the bag’s owner and contact authorities before or immediately after landing.
Reports also said the suspect initially claimed the bag was his before changing his account, although those details come from media reports and passenger accounts rather than a publicly released court finding.
A reminder for international travellers
The incident highlights a simple but important precaution for passengers: keep cash, passports, electronics and other valuables where they can be monitored whenever possible.
Overhead compartments are designed for cabin baggage, but passengers may not always notice when someone opens a compartment that is not directly above their seat.
Travellers can reduce the risk of losing valuables by keeping passports, wallets and substantial amounts of cash in a personal bag that remains close to them.

The 57-year-old man has been arrested on suspicion of theft, but an arrest is not a finding of guilt.
Hong Kong authorities are continuing to investigate the circumstances surrounding the alleged incident, including the property involved and evidence provided by passengers.
