Malaysian police have arrested 53 people, including eight minors and two civil servants, in a nationwide crackdown targeting the possession, distribution and alleged sale of child sexual abuse material.
The arrests were made between Sept. 14 and 16 under Operation Pedo Integrated 3.0, a joint operation involving Bukit Aman’s Criminal Investigation Department and the Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission.
Police said the suspects were among 92 targets identified after months of intelligence gathering. The eight minors were aged between 13 and 18, while the two civil servants included a 24-year-old teacher and a 44-year-old laboratory assistant employed at another school.
Authorities also uncovered cases involving AI-generated animated material. Police said some suspects were allegedly involved in producing, possessing, distributing or selling such material through closed online groups, with individual videos reportedly offered for between RM50 and RM60.
The involvement of minors in the operation has drawn particular attention. Bukit Aman CID director Datuk M. Kumar described the development as worrying, pointing to the broader risks posed by the use of technology to create and distribute abusive material involving children.
During the raids, police seized 95 items, including 90 digital devices such as mobile phones, computers, laptops, tablets, storage devices and routers or modems. Five sex toys were also seized.
Initial examination of the devices uncovered 653,193 digital files. Police said 540,127 were child sexual abuse material files, while another 113,066 were adult pornography files.
Authorities have opened 52 investigation papers following the operation. As of Sept. 21, court action had been taken against 23 suspects, while 29 remained under investigation. One of those arrested was a foreign national, with the others identified as Malaysians.
The latest operation also highlights the growing scale of online child exploitation investigations in Malaysia. The Star reported that Ops Pedo and Operation Cyber Guardian have uncovered more than 2.1 million CSAM and pornography files since 2024, with 170 arrests and 369 items seized across the operations.
Police said the number of arrests linked to Ops Pedo has increased with each operation: 13 arrests in 2024, 31 in 2025 and 53 in the latest nationwide operation.
The case also illustrates a growing challenge for law enforcement: digital technology can make abusive material easier to create, store and distribute, while closed online groups can make such activity harder to detect.
The investigation remains ongoing, and allegations against the suspects will have to be tested through Malaysia’s legal process.
