SEOUL, South Korea — South Korean baseball star Kim Do-yeong has undergone surgery for a broken nose after a freak injury during a KBO game, putting the country’s hopes of having its star slugger at the upcoming Aichi-Nagoya Asian Games under renewed uncertainty.
The KIA Tigers confirmed Thursday that Kim underwent a procedure to realign the fractured nasal bone on Wednesday night, just hours after a batted ball struck him in the face during a game against the NC Dinos in Gwangju. He is scheduled to leave the hospital on Friday, with his return timetable to be determined based on his recovery.
For KIA, the timing could hardly be worse.
For South Korea, it could be even more consequential.
A Freak Injury Changes Everything
Kim suffered the injury Wednesday while attempting a surprise bunt.
During the fourth inning, with KIA trailing NC, the ball ricocheted off his bat and flew directly into his face. He immediately began bleeding and was removed from the game.
Medical examinations, including imaging, confirmed a nasal-bone fracture. The Tigers initially said they would determine the treatment approach after consulting medical staff. By Wednesday night, the club had proceeded with a nasal-bone reduction procedure.
The injury was particularly unfortunate because Kim had been enjoying one of the best seasons of his young career.
The 40-Homer Season That Suddenly Hit Pause
The 22-year-old Kim entered the game as one of the most productive hitters in the KBO.
He is batting around .306 with 40 home runs, 99 RBIs and 10 stolen bases in 122 games, according to the latest reports. He also leads the league in home runs and has produced an OPS above 1.000.
His 40th homer came just one day before the injury, when he launched a solo shot against the Samsung Lions.
That milestone was historic for the Tigers: Kim became the first homegrown KIA player to reach 40 home runs in a single season, according to Korean media reports.
The timing made the injury especially painful.
Kim had returned in 2026 determined to rebound after an injury-disrupted 2025 campaign in which he appeared in only 30 games because of multiple hamstring problems. This year, he had played every game before the facial injury ended that streak.
Why the Asian Games Are Now the Big Question
Kim was selected for South Korea’s baseball team for the 2026 Aichi-Nagoya Asian Games, where the country will attempt to win its fifth consecutive baseball gold medal.
The baseball tournament begins Sept. 21, with South Korea scheduled to face Chinese Taipei in its opening game.
The national team is scheduled to begin its training camp in Seoul next week before traveling to Japan. Yonhap reported that players are scheduled to depart for Nagoya on Sept. 18.
That leaves a very narrow window for Kim to recover.
The KIA Tigers have not announced that he is out of the Asian Games. Instead, the club says his return will be determined after monitoring his recovery.
Kim is also reportedly determined to try to participate in the tournament.
South Korea Has a Major Decision to Make
Kim was expected to occupy an important position in the middle of South Korea’s batting order.
His combination of power, speed and versatility has made him one of the country’s most important young baseball players.
Losing him would therefore be more than a simple roster change.
It could force manager Ryu Ji-hyun to reconsider the team’s batting order and infield plans only days before the tournament.
At the same time, medical clearance and recovery have to take priority.
The fact that Kim underwent surgery does not automatically mean he will miss the Asian Games, but it also does not guarantee that he will be ready to play. His condition over the coming days will determine whether he can safely return to baseball activities.
KIA Also Faces a Playoff Race
The injury is equally significant for the Tigers.
KIA entered the final stretch of the regular season fighting for postseason positioning. Yonhap reported that the Tigers were sitting fourth and chasing a higher playoff seed.
Kim has been central to that push.
His absence could therefore affect both of South Korea’s biggest baseball storylines at once: the KBO postseason race and the national team’s Asian Games campaign.
The Clock Is Now Ticking
Kim’s injury came at precisely the wrong moment.
His 40-home-run season had put him among the biggest stars in Korean baseball. His selection for the Asian Games had given South Korea another powerful weapon as it sought a fifth straight gold medal.
Now, everything depends on recovery.
The KIA Tigers say Kim is expected to be discharged from the hospital Friday, after which the club will monitor his condition and determine when he can resume baseball activities.
For now, there is no confirmed return date.
That leaves South Korean baseball with one enormous question heading into the Asian Games:
Will Kim Do-yeong recover quickly enough to turn a frightening setback into a remarkable comeback?
The answer could come down to just a few critical days.
