BACOLOD CITY — The countdown to one of the Philippines’ most anticipated festivals is about to get even more exciting as MassKara Festival 2026 officially unveils its major attractions on September 11, giving Bacolodnons and visitors their first comprehensive look at what is being prepared for this year’s celebration.
Dubbed “FIRST PEEK: The Smiles Are Coming,” the official launch will be held at Roy’s Hotel and Convention Center in Bacolod City.
Registration and cocktails are scheduled to begin at 9 a.m., followed by the formal program at 10 a.m.
The launch comes just weeks before the festival’s main run from October 1 to 18, 2026, with major highlights scheduled from October 9 to 18.
THE BIG REVEALS ARE FINALLY COMING
Festival Director and Bacolod Gugma Foundation Inc. (BGFI) President Rodney Ascalon is expected to lead the presentation of the major components of MassKara 2026.
Among the most anticipated announcements is the unveiling of the festival’s official logo, which will introduce a new twin-logo concept.
Organizers will also unveil the festival’s official theme song, produced and arranged by local musicians and artists.
Another major moment will be the formal introduction of the candidates for Miss Bacolod MassKara 2026.
And that may only be the beginning.
Organizers are expected to reveal more details involving competitions, entertainment, cultural activities, sports, community programs and other attractions planned for this year’s celebration.
“SHARE THE SMILE, CELEBRATE GUGMA”
MassKara 2026 will carry the theme:
“Share the Smile, Celebrate Gugma.”
The theme reflects the festival’s emphasis on resilience, friendship, family, community, generosity and love, while also connecting MassKara’s long-running traditions with younger generations.
BGFI previously explained that “Share the Smile” pays tribute to the generations of Bacolodnons who helped build and preserve the MassKara tradition, while “Celebrate Gugma” encourages today’s generation to bring new ideas and creative expressions into the celebration.
The message reinforces MassKara’s identity as more than a tourism event—it is also a celebration of Bacolod’s culture and community.
18 DAYS OF MASSKARA—BUT THE BIGGEST EVENTS COME LATER
The official festival schedule places MassKara 2026 from October 1 to 18.
The opening stretch from October 1 to 8 will feature pre-MassKara activities, including mall events, arts-centered programs, sports activities, pageant-related events and other preliminary gatherings.
The major festival highlights are scheduled for October 9 to 18.
Among the events being prepared are the MassKaralympics, street-dancing competitions, arena competitions, Electric MassKara, cultural activities, entertainment programs and sectoral events.
The festival will also include food, music, pageantry and community-oriented activities across Bacolod.
A NEW VENUE IS COMING FOR THE ARENA COMPETITION
One of the most significant changes this year involves the MassKara Arena Dance Competition.
The competition will no longer be held at the Paglaum Sports Complex, after organizers determined that the facility was unsuitable for a production of the event’s scale because of safety concerns.
The new arena venue is expected to be announced during the festival preparations.
The move is part of organizers’ effort to improve safety and create a more manageable setup for participants and spectators.
MORE BARANGAYS, SCHOOLS AND CONTINGENTS EXPECTED
MassKara 2026 is also expected to bring strong participation from different sectors.
Organizers are planning for eight barangays to compete in the barangay category of the street and arena competitions, while seven schools are expected to participate in the school category.
The Electric MassKara is expected to feature 10 contingents, while 15 candidates are expected to compete for the Miss Bacolod MassKara crown.
The school street-dancing category is also being eyed for continuation after drawing strong attention during last year’s festival. Mayor Greg Gasataya previously highlighted its impact and recommended retaining it.
BACOLOD AND BGFI HAVE FORMALIZED THE PARTNERSHIP
The 2026 celebration also comes after the city government and BGFI formalized their partnership.
The Bacolod Sangguniang Panlungsod ratified the Memorandum of Agreement (MOA) between the City Government of Bacolod and BGFI on August 26, clearing the way for the foundation to officially implement this year’s MassKara Festival.
That agreement provides a clearer organizational framework as the city prepares for the festival.
WHY MASSKARA REMAINS SO IMPORTANT TO BACOLOD
MassKara’s significance goes far beyond colorful masks, dancing and entertainment.
The festival emerged during a difficult period in Negros Occidental in the early 1980s, when the region was dealing with the sugar industry crisis and the tragic sinking of the M/V Don Juan.
The celebration became a symbol of resilience and the determination of Bacolodnons and Negrenses to continue moving forward despite adversity.
That history remains central to the festival’s identity today.
THE CITY OF SMILES IS ABOUT TO SHOW ITS NEXT CHAPTER
With the September 11 launch, Bacolod will finally begin revealing what organizers have been preparing behind the scenes for months.
The public is expected to get its first major look at the MassKara 2026 logo, theme song, Miss Bacolod MassKara candidates, competitions, entertainment lineup, venues and other festival attractions.
And with this year’s promise of a more inclusive, innovative and community-driven MassKara, the biggest question now is:
What will Bacolod unveil on September 11—and which of those surprises will become the festival’s biggest attraction this October?
