KATHMANDU — Nepal and China’s Tibet region are facing a race against time after a catastrophic flash flood tore through Himalayan communities, leaving nearly 400 people dead and more than 1,400 missing, while authorities warn that newly formed lakes could unleash another wave of flooding.
The disaster struck on August 26 along the mountainous Nepal-China border after a massive collapse of ice and rock sent an enormous torrent of water, mud and debris through river valleys.
By Friday, authorities in Nepal had confirmed 389 deaths and 910 people missing, while officials in Tibet reported three deaths and 558 missing — bringing the combined toll to 392 dead and 1,468 missing. The figures remain subject to change as rescuers reach areas that have been cut off by destroyed roads and bridges.
A disaster that struck with terrifying speed
The flood devastated communities along the Bhote Koshi and Trishuli river systems, sweeping away houses, vehicles, bridges, roads and power infrastructure.
Satellite imagery and scientific assessments indicate that the disaster was likely triggered by a massive ice-and-rock avalanche associated with a glacier collapse.
Initial reports suggested that an earthquake may have triggered the event. However, the U.S. Geological Survey later assessed the seismic signal as a magnitude 5.2 event caused by the glacier collapse itself, rather than a conventional earthquake. Scientists say the exact chain of events remains under investigation.
The International Centre for Integrated Mountain Development said water levels in the Trishuli River rose by as much as 9 meters in only 30 minutes, helping explain why many people had almost no time to escape.
Reuters reported that before-and-after satellite images showed sections of once-green mountain terrain buried beneath huge amounts of brown sediment and debris.
More than 1,400 people are still missing
The scale of the missing-person crisis has turned the disaster into an international emergency.
Nepal’s tourism authorities reported hundreds of foreigners among those unaccounted for. AP reported that 517 foreigners were missing in Nepal, including 178 Indians and more than 60 Americans, with people from more than 30 countries affected.
India has also been urgently tracking its citizens. Indian authorities previously reported hundreds of nationals missing or uncontactable, including pilgrims and workers connected to projects in the affected region. Some missing Indian visitors have since been located or rescued, illustrating how quickly the numbers are changing.
The affected area is also an important route for tourists and religious pilgrims traveling toward Tibet, including people visiting Mount Kailash, one of the region’s most significant pilgrimage destinations.
Rescue teams face destroyed roads and bridges
The rescue operation has been severely hampered by the destruction of critical infrastructure.
More than 35 bridges and approximately 40 kilometers of roads were damaged or destroyed in Nepal, according to the United Nations. Helicopters have therefore become essential for reaching isolated communities, evacuating injured people and delivering emergency supplies.
Nepal has mobilized more than 30,000 security personnel for search-and-rescue and relief operations. The Nepali Army has also used helicopters to evacuate people trapped in remote areas and facilities connected to the Trishuli hydropower project.
China has mounted its own major response in Tibet. Chinese Premier Li Qiang traveled to Gyirong to oversee rescue operations, with hundreds of military and paramilitary personnel deployed alongside helicopters.
The next danger: Another flood
Perhaps the most alarming development is that the first disaster may not be the last.
The collapse and accumulation of debris have contributed to the formation of new lakes in the mountainous border region. Authorities on both sides have warned that one of these unstable bodies of water could breach its natural barrier and send another destructive surge downstream.
AP reported that a newly formed lake near the China-Nepal border contained approximately 2 million cubic meters of water and could receive several million more cubic meters in the following days. Chinese authorities warned that a failure of the natural dam could trigger additional flooding.
That threat has complicated rescue operations, forcing authorities to balance the urgent search for survivors with the possibility of another sudden flood.
Why did the glacier collapse?
Scientists say the immediate trigger appears to have been the collapse of ice and rock in a high-altitude Himalayan environment, but the broader causes are more complicated.
Researchers have increasingly warned that rising temperatures are destabilizing glaciers, frozen ground and steep mountain slopes across the Himalayas.
Reuters reported that Nepal’s glaciers have lost close to one-third of their ice over roughly three decades, while scientists cautioned that climate change should not automatically be described as the sole immediate cause of this particular collapse. Instead, warming can create conditions that make high-altitude ice and rock systems more unstable.
The disaster therefore raises a much larger question for countries across the Himalayan region: how prepared are communities downstream when a glacier collapse can transform into a devastating flood within minutes?
International aid begins moving
The scale of the disaster has prompted an international response.
The United Nations has released US$2 million from its emergency response fund for immediate humanitarian assistance, while international partners and governments have pledged additional support. AP reported that commitments from the World Bank, India, China and the United States brought announced support to more than US$229 million.
The focus, however, remains firmly on the thousands of people whose families are still waiting for news.
For rescuers, every hour matters. Damaged roads, unstable slopes, debris-choked rivers and the threat of another flood are making an already enormous search operation even more difficult.
And as helicopters continue flying over devastated valleys, authorities face a grim reality: the final human toll may not yet be known.
