DUMAGUETE CITY, Negros Oriental — A 45-year-old American wanted by authorities in the United States has been arrested in Dumaguete City after Philippine immigration agents tracked him down, authorities said.
The Bureau of Immigration (BI) identified the fugitive as Jason Michael Hill, who was apprehended on August 11, 2026, at Purok St. John in Barangay Calindagan. The arrest was carried out by the BI’s Fugitive Search Unit in coordination with U.S. law enforcement authorities, the Philippine National Police, local police, and maritime authorities.
According to the BI, Hill is allegedly wanted in the United States for a parole violation linked to an underlying dangerous drugs case. An outstanding warrant for his arrest was issued by the Sacramento County Superior Court in California.
From Tourist to Immigration Fugitive
Immigration records showed that Hill entered the Philippines in March 2023 as a temporary visitor but had since overstayed his authorized stay, according to the BI.
Authorities also said he had existing derogatory records with the immigration bureau and was considered an undesirable alien and fugitive from justice.
The arrest highlights the growing coordination between Philippine authorities and foreign law enforcement agencies in tracking down fugitives believed to be staying in the country.
‘The Philippines Is Not a Safe Haven’
BI Commissioner Joel Anthony Viado issued a strong warning following the operation, saying fugitives should not assume they can escape accountability by crossing borders.
“Let this be a clear message to fugitives: the Philippines is not a safe haven for those escaping justice,” Viado said in the BI statement.
He added that Philippine immigration authorities would continue working with foreign law enforcement partners to locate wanted individuals and subject them to the appropriate legal and immigration processes.
Hill remains in the custody of the Bureau of Immigration while immigration proceedings move forward. Authorities have not publicly announced a timetable for his possible removal from the country or any further legal action.
A Broader Crackdown on Foreign Fugitives
Hill’s arrest comes amid continued efforts by Philippine authorities to locate foreign nationals wanted abroad or facing immigration violations while staying in the country. The BI said the operation supports the government’s broader push to strengthen border security and prevent the Philippines from becoming a refuge for individuals fleeing criminal cases overseas.
For Hill, what began as a temporary visit to the Philippines has now ended with an arrest in Dumaguete—and a legal process that could determine where he goes next.
Authorities have made their message clear: crossing borders may delay justice, but it does not necessarily make someone disappear.
