Netflix’s “Take Charge of My Heart” Recharges the Classic K-Rom-Com Formula With a High-Voltage Twist

The classic Korean romantic-comedy formula is getting a high-voltage makeover.

Netflix’s upcoming “Take Charge of My Heart” brings together Kim Young-kwang and Chae Soo-bin in a fantasy-driven romance that mixes familiar K-drama tropes with an unusual premise: a man with an artificial heart meets a woman whose body generates electricity.

The 10-episode series is scheduled to premiere on Netflix on October 9, 2026, giving K-drama fans a new romantic comedy to watch this fall.

A Chaebol Heir With a Very Unusual Problem

Kim Young-kwang stars as Baek Ho-rang, a third-generation chaebol heir whose polished image hides a potentially life-threatening problem: his artificial heart depends on a battery that is running dangerously low.

A sudden hospital blackout leaves his artificial heart without enough power, creating an unexpected crisis just as he is facing an important transition involving his family’s business.

His solution comes from an unlikely person.

She Has Electricity. He Can Handle It.

Chae Soo-bin plays Na Bo-bae, a screenwriter whose life has been complicated by a strange ability to generate electrical currents through her body.

Because physical contact can shock other people, Bo-bae has struggled with romance and even wears gloves to avoid accidentally hurting those around her.

Then she meets Ho-rang — the one person who appears to be immune to her electrical power.

An accidental kiss and a subsequent hospital encounter reveal the surprising connection between them: Bo-bae’s touch can recharge Ho-rang’s artificial heart.

That discovery leads to an unusual arrangement.

Ho-rang needs Bo-bae’s help to keep his heart powered while waiting for another procedure, while Bo-bae needs to complete a romance-writing project despite having virtually no dating experience. Their solution is a contract that brings the two strangers into increasingly complicated situations together.

Familiar K-Drama Tropes With a Fantasy Upgrade

At its core, “Take Charge of My Heart” uses recognizable elements of the Korean rom-com genre: a wealthy male lead, a contract relationship and two people whose initially practical arrangement gradually becomes more complicated.

But the series adds a supernatural twist through Bo-bae’s electrical powers and Ho-rang’s artificial heart.

Director Park Soo-won, making her romantic-comedy debut, said the goal was not to abandon familiar genre conventions but to give those conventions a distinctive execution. She previously directed projects including “Work Later, Drink Now” and “Birthcare Center.”

The series is based on the Naver web novel “Charge Me Up” by Haebeon and is written by Song You-chae.

Kim Young-kwang and Chae Soo-bin Return to Romance

For Kim Young-kwang, the project offered an opportunity to return to a genre built around playful romantic chemistry.

He described the script as having the kind of imaginative quality associated with romance comics, while emphasizing a more restrained approach to playing Ho-rang.

Chae Soo-bin said she initially had reservations about taking on the genre but was ultimately drawn to the lively and warm story.

Netflix describes the series as a romantic comedy built around the unlikely relationship between a corporate heir with an artificial heart and a woman who is “literally electric.”

When Does “Take Charge of My Heart” Premiere?

“Take Charge of My Heart” premieres October 9, 2026, on Netflix. Netflix has announced the series as a 2026 Korean romantic comedy starring Kim Young-kwang and Chae Soo-bin.

With a familiar contract-romance setup, a supernatural hook and two leads returning to the rom-com genre, the series is putting a literal spark into one of K-drama’s most recognizable formulas.

And the biggest question may not be whether Ho-rang and Bo-bae fall for each other — but what happens when the relationship that keeps his heart running becomes something neither of them planned for.
