Celine Gives Reebok’s 1980s Freestyle Lo a Luxury Makeover in Eight Colorways

PARIS — One of Reebok’s most recognizable 1980s sneakers is getting a high-fashion revival as Celine reimagines the iconic Freestyle Lo in a luxury collaboration spanning eight colorways.

The collaboration brings together Celine and Reebok for a new interpretation of the Freestyle Lo, a silhouette originally introduced in 1982 and closely associated with the rise of women’s aerobics and fitness culture. Celine’s version keeps the recognizable low-profile shape while giving it a distinctly luxury treatment.

From aerobics icon to luxury sneaker

The Freestyle Lo was originally developed as an athletic shoe during the fitness boom of the early 1980s. Its low-cut profile and supportive construction helped establish it as one of Reebok’s signature heritage designs.

More than four decades later, Celine has brought the silhouette into a very different fashion environment.

Under creative director Michael Rider, the French fashion house presented the updated sneaker as part of its Spring 2027 menswear show in Paris. The collaboration combines the American sportswear heritage of Reebok with Celine’s Parisian fashion aesthetic.

Eight colors give the classic a new identity

Celine’s official release lists eight colorways:

  • Optic White
  • Black
  • Butter
  • Beige
  • Peanut
  • Dark Brown
  • Oxblood
  • Fluo Red

The range moves from understated neutrals to richer autumn shades and a striking red, giving the retro silhouette considerably more styling flexibility.

Celine describes the concept as “1 style. 8 colours. Infinite possibilities,” emphasizing the sneaker’s versatility rather than treating it as a one-off runway novelty.

A softer, more luxurious construction

The biggest transformation is in the materials.

Instead of simply reproducing the original athletic version, Celine has reworked the Freestyle Lo in soft leather, giving the sneaker a more refined appearance and a distinctly luxury feel.

The updated design also incorporates Celine branding alongside Reebok’s heritage identity, creating a visual balance between the two brands.

Nostalgia meets the luxury sneaker boom

The collaboration arrives as luxury fashion houses continue turning to recognizable sportswear silhouettes.

Recent collaborations involving major fashion and athletic brands have helped blur the line between traditional luxury footwear and everyday sneakers. Celine’s Reebok project follows that broader movement while drawing heavily on nostalgia for 1980s fashion and fitness culture.

That combination could make the Freestyle Lo particularly appealing to shoppers looking for something that feels both familiar and contemporary.

The price gap tells its own story

The original Freestyle became known as an accessible athletic shoe. Celine’s reinterpretation occupies an entirely different part of the market.

El País reported a price of €650 for the Celine version, highlighting the substantial premium attached to the luxury treatment. The publication also reported that the launch sold through most sizes and colors rapidly, underscoring the demand surrounding the collaboration.

That price difference illustrates the central appeal of the collaboration: consumers are not simply buying an old Reebok silhouette. They are buying a heritage sneaker reframed through a luxury-fashion lens.

A retro sneaker gets a new life

The Celine x Reebok Freestyle Lo demonstrates how powerful fashion nostalgia has become.

A sneaker that emerged from the aerobics boom more than 40 years ago has now moved from the gym floor to the runway and luxury retail environment.

For Celine, the collaboration provides a way to connect its newer creative direction with an instantly recognizable piece of American sportswear history. For Reebok, it puts one of its heritage silhouettes back into the center of the luxury-fashion conversation.

The Freestyle Lo has already survived four decades of changing trends. Now, with Celine behind it, the 1980s icon is getting another chance to become the sneaker everyone is talking about.
