25-Year-Old Rider Dies After Motorcycle Crashes Into Parked Truck in Samboan

A 25-year-old motorcycle rider died after his vehicle crashed into the rear of a parked delivery truck in Barangay Colase, Samboan, Cebu, in the early hours of October 1.

The victim was identified as Junel James Busmeon Trapa, a resident of Barangay Canlumacad in Santander, Cebu. He was declared dead on arrival at a hospital in nearby Oslob after sustaining injuries in the crash. 

The accident happened at around 3:15 a.m. as Trapa was traveling along the road in Barangay Colase. Initial police findings showed that his motorcycle struck the rear portion of a Hino delivery truck with plate number UHV 443, which was parked along the roadside.

According to Police Master Sgt. Jerrom Sobreviga of the Samboan Police Station, Trapa had traveled from Santander the previous evening to attend a concert held as part of a local fiesta.

He was reportedly on his way back to Santander when he turned around and returned toward Samboan town proper. The crash occurred later while he was passing through Barangay Colase. 

Police said the rider was reportedly traveling at a high speed at the time of the incident. Investigators also said he was not wearing a helmet when the motorcycle collided with the parked truck.

The circumstances surrounding the crash are still based on the initial police investigation, which is examining the road conditions, the position of the truck and the actions of the rider before the collision. 

The delivery truck had reportedly been parked at the location for more than a week before the accident. Its owner, a resident of Santander, said the vehicle had broken down and could no longer be driven because of a problem with its steering.

The truck owner was waiting for a replacement part before the vehicle could be repaired and moved from the roadside. 

Police investigator Sobreviga said an early warning device had been placed near the parked truck to alert approaching motorists. It was positioned more than half a meter away from the vehicle, according to the investigation.

Despite the warning device, Trapa’s motorcycle struck the rear section of the truck, resulting in the fatal crash. 

The impact left Trapa critically injured. He was brought to a hospital in Oslob, but doctors later declared him dead on arrival.

The incident has prompted attention to the risks faced by motorists traveling along roads where disabled vehicles are forced to remain parked for extended periods, particularly during late-night and early-morning hours when visibility may be reduced. 

The truck owner has expressed willingness to help shoulder expenses related to the victim following the fatal collision.

Authorities have not reported any further legal action against the truck owner in the initial account, while the investigation into the circumstances of the crash continues. 

The fatal incident serves as another reminder for motorists to reduce speed and remain alert when approaching parked or disabled vehicles, especially on roads where vehicles may have limited room to move off the main carriageway.

Police continue to document the circumstances surrounding the collision as part of the investigation. 
