JAKARTA, Indonesia — The driver still printed the receipt. Thermal paper, slightly curled, a map thumbnail the size of a postage stamp, and the pin sitting exactly on the kos door in Bekasi as if the building had posed for it. He handed it over with the change from a cash trip the passenger had insisted on, late, rain starting.
Most of us do not even get the paper anymore. The digital copy is worse. It sits in email, in the app, in the screenshot you dropped into a WhatsApp group with “share loc, I’m here.” Home pin. Office pin. The midnight martabak order. The wallet you prefer. A tidy diary of how you move through Sudirman, Senopati, and the street behind the Indomaret that only locals bother to name.
Drivers do not need a lecture about this. Passengers do.
You cannot delete the ride from the company’s brain. You can stop feeding extra detail, and you can clean what sits on your own phone. Five checks. One of them is annoying on a rainy night. Do that one anyway.
1. The pin that should not be your door
Drop the pin at the cluster gate or the Indomaret on the corner, not the unit number, if you live in a dense kos or a small street that is easy to map. Walk the last 40 metres.
It is annoying on a rainy Jakarta night. The gutter by the gate will be doing that thing gutters do. Your shoes will take the meeting. It is also the difference between a receipt that says your block and a receipt that says your door.
We tried both versions of the same Bekasi street on a Tuesday. Gate pin: the driver stopped under the streetlamp, we walked. Door pin: the car idled in front of the kos, engine on, the kind of pause that tells the whole alley someone is home. The receipt kept the second story longer than the rain did.
If you are carrying shopping, fine, bring it closer. If you are coming home alone after 10, the extra walk is not toughness. It is a smaller map.
A colleague who lives behind a warung in Bekasi used to drop the pin on the warung because “everyone knows the warung.” Everyone does. That is the problem. She moved it to the Indomaret two turns earlier. Same rain. Different receipt. The warung uncle still waves. He does not need to be a saved place.
2. Grab does not need to know about lunch
“Always” location is how a ride app becomes a diary. Set it to “while using.” Force-close the app after you arrive.
This will not make you a ghost. It will stop the phone from whispering where you had lunch in Senopati to anything else that shares that permission model. It will also stop the little “Grab is using your location” pill from sitting on the status bar while you are in a meeting that is none of Grab’s business.
A slightly opinionated line: “Always” is a setting designed for a product team, not for a passenger. The app works fine on “while using.” We ran a week of office commutes that way. Cars still arrived. Food still arrived. The status bar looked like a status bar again.
Android and iPhone bury this in slightly different places. Search the settings for Grab, then location. If it says Always, that is the work. Not a new app. A tap.
3. The screenshot that tells on you
People screenshot receipts into WhatsApp groups. “Share loc, I’m here.” Those images include map thumbnails and sometimes a partial card or wallet ID. GoPay and OVO are fine. A group chat full of full-resolution bills is not.
Crop. Or better: send an ETA in text, not a receipt. “Five minutes, gate” is enough. Your friends do not need the driver’s plate, the route line, and the exact kos number in the same JPEG.
We have a newsdesk group that used to be a graveyard of these screenshots. Finance needed some of them. Friends did not. The rule now is: crop to the amount and the time, or do not send. It took one person doing it for a week before the rest copied, which is how group habits actually change. Not a memo. A less ugly screenshot.
If you expense Grab, email the receipt to yourself from the app, do not photograph the screen on the MRT. The photograph is how a full map thumbnail ends up in a camera roll you will later back up to a cloud you forgot you had.
4. Saved places are a relationship history
Office, gym, “mama,” ex’s building from 2022: saved places are a relationship history the app did not ask to keep this clearly. Delete what you do not use. Rename what you do.
If a driver can see a label, pick a label you would be willing to say out loud in a lift. “Home” is already a lot. “Mama’s room” is a short story. “Unit 4B” is a floor plan.
Twice a year is enough. Chinese New Year week is a decent reminder, or the week you change jobs and the old office pin is suddenly a building you do not miss. We cleaned a desk phone and found a pin labelled with a first name and a heart. The heart was doing a lot of work. The pin still opened a map.
Teenagers in a family house should get the same talk, without the TED cadence. Cluster name. Gate. Not the bedroom window.
5. Driver chat is on the record
The in-app chat is handy for “saya di lobby.” It is not a place for ID numbers, kos gate codes, or a photo of your face next to a unit door.
If a code is required, send it when the car is downstairs, then change it later if your building allows. Old messages sit in the thread longer than you think. They sit there after you have forgotten the driver, after you have rated the trip, after you have ordered martabak from the same account on a different night.
A gate code in chat is a gate code in a database you do not control. Some buildings will let you issue a one-time code. Use that. Some will not. Then you walk to the gate, which brings us back to Number 1, which is where most of this piece actually lives.
Do not send a selfie with the door. We have seen this. It was meant to help a driver who was lost. It also helped anyone who ever got access to that thread. The lobby sign is enough. The lobby sign does not have your face.
If you share a kos or a family house
Saved places should not say “Mama’s room” or a unit number a driver can read in the rain. Use the cluster name. Tell the house the same pin rule.
A Grab receipt in a family WhatsApp is still a map. Crop or don’t send. The aunt in Surabaya does not need to know which Indomaret is your landmark, even if she is nice, even if the group is only family, even if you think of WhatsApp as a closed room. It is not a closed room. It is a forwarding machine with birthday stickers.
Jakarta travel already publishes a lot about you: traffic, hours, a Grab pin that a motorcycle can follow. You do not need to publish the rest.
Soften the home pin. Shrink location access. Crop receipts. Prune saved places. Keep gate codes out of the chat.
Drivers wish more passengers did the pin and the code part, mostly because it saves them from idling in an alley that does not love a Toyota. Do it for yourself anyway. The thermal paper will fade. The screenshot will not.
