SINGAPORE — A simple birthday surprise from a Temasek Polytechnic student to a beloved canteen worker has touched thousands online after the man revealed that no one had ever celebrated his birthday specifically for him.
Student Chloe Lee shared the emotional moment in a TikTok video posted on Oct. 6, showing her approaching the canteen staff member she affectionately calls Uncle Heng with a slice of birthday cake.
Her gesture, which she described as a way of thanking him for always bringing smiles to students, quickly resonated with viewers and sparked a wider conversation about appreciating non-teaching staff in schools.
Student surprises favourite canteen uncle
In the video, Chloe can be seen walking towards Uncle Heng while singing the Mandarin version of “Happy Birthday”.
The elderly man initially had his back turned to her and appeared unaware of what was happening.
When he turned around and saw Chloe holding the cake, he appeared visibly stunned. He paused before making his way towards the student to receive the surprise.
What began as a small birthday gesture soon became an emotional exchange.
After receiving the cake, Uncle Heng told Chloe: “No one has celebrated just for me before.”
The comment appeared to catch Chloe off guard as the moment became increasingly emotional.
‘I feel very blessed’
Uncle Heng went on to explain that his birthdays had previously been celebrated only at church, where he had attended for more than 10 years.
As he became tearful, he thanked Chloe for remembering him and said: “I feel very blessed, thank you.”
For Chloe, the surprise was more than simply bringing someone a birthday cake.
In her TikTok caption, she gave a shoutout to Uncle Heng and thanked him for being someone who regularly brings happiness to people around him.
She also hoped the gesture would encourage greater appreciation for non-teaching staff working in schools.
“Everyone’s birthday deserves to be celebrated,” she wrote.
A reminder to appreciate school staff
While teachers often receive recognition from students during occasions such as Teachers’ Day, Chloe’s gesture focused attention on another group of people who form an important part of daily school life.
Canteen workers, cleaners, security officers and other support staff interact with students regularly but may receive less public recognition than teaching staff.
The video offered a glimpse into one such relationship, with Chloe describing Uncle Heng as her favourite canteen uncle.
Her decision to celebrate his birthday also showed how a relatively small act of kindness can carry significant meaning for the person receiving it.
Netizens praise Chloe’s gesture
The video quickly drew warm reactions from viewers, many of whom praised Chloe for taking the time to celebrate someone who may otherwise have had a quiet birthday.
One commenter said they hoped their own daughters would grow up to be as kind and thoughtful as Chloe.
Another said Uncle Heng would likely remember the moment for the rest of his life and thanked Chloe for setting an example of kindness.
The reactions also reflected how relatable the moment was for many viewers.
Rather than an elaborate celebration or expensive gift, Chloe had simply brought a cake and taken a few moments to make someone feel remembered.
‘Everyone’s birthday deserves to be celebrated’
The emotional response from Uncle Heng appeared to underline the significance of the gesture.
For someone who had apparently never had a birthday celebration organised specifically for him outside his church community, the surprise from a student he had come to know at the polytechnic was clearly meaningful.
The incident also highlights how relationships between students and school staff can extend beyond routine daily interactions.
A familiar greeting, a smile or a small gesture of appreciation can sometimes make a lasting difference.
Chloe’s message was ultimately straightforward: people who spend their days making others feel welcome and cared for deserve to receive the same kindness in return.
And for Uncle Heng, a slice of cake and a birthday song from one student turned an ordinary day at the canteen into a memory he is unlikely to forget.
