Hong Kong’s redeveloped Huanggang Port could begin operations as early as October 12, introducing a new joint clearance system that will allow travellers to complete Hong Kong and mainland Chinese immigration procedures at a single inspection facility.
Authorities are targeting October 12 for the opening, according to the South China Morning Post, although the date remains dependent on whether the new facility is ready for operation.
The planned launch would meet the Hong Kong government’s target of opening the revamped border crossing during the fourth quarter of 2026.
The new facility will adopt a co-location arrangement between Hong Kong and mainland authorities. Under the “collaborative inspection and joint clearance” model, travellers are expected to undergo immigration procedures more efficiently within the same facility.
Chief Executive John Lee Ka-chiu highlighted the new arrangement in his latest policy address, saying it was intended to improve both the efficiency of border clearance and the overall experience for passengers.
The revamped Huanggang Port has undergone several large-scale trial runs involving thousands of civil servants. Authorities have used the exercises to test immigration procedures, transport arrangements and crowd management ahead of the opening.
Further preparations are expected before the targeted October opening, with officials continuing to assess the facility’s operational readiness.
