US autonomous driving company Waymo plans to launch its robotaxi service in Singapore by 2028, marking its first expansion into Southeast Asia.
The Alphabet-owned company said its all-electric vehicles will begin arriving in Singapore in the coming months. Waymo plans to map local roads and conduct autonomous driving tests with safety drivers in 2027 before working towards fully autonomous ride-hailing services for the public in 2028.
The rollout will require approval from Singapore’s Land Transport Authority, with autonomous vehicles subject to safety assessments before they can operate on public roads.
Waymo said Singapore’s transport environment and regulatory approach made it a suitable market for its international expansion. The company has already established a corporate presence in the city-state and participates in Singapore’s Steering Committee on Autonomous Vehicles.
Singapore has also been expanding trials of autonomous vehicles. Local operators have been running autonomous shuttle services in Punggol since September 2025, with public rides beginning in April 2026.
Waymo’s Singapore plans form part of a broader international expansion. The company is also targeting robotaxi launches in London, Tokyo and Munich as it expands beyond its existing US markets.
The company said the Singapore service would complement the city-state’s existing public transport network while creating additional transport options for residents.
