SINGAPORE — A mother and her teenage son are set to face charges after Singapore police arrested the pair over separate alleged shop-theft cases at Changi Airport, with items worth thousands of Singapore dollars recovered.
The 39-year-old woman and her 16-year-old son, both Uzbekistan nationals, are due to be charged in court on Sept. 16, according to Singapore police and local media reports.
The alleged thefts took place in the transit area of Terminal 2 on Aug. 28.
Police investigation began after airport shop theft
Police said they were alerted at about 6:45 p.m. on Aug. 28 after a shop-theft case was reported at a retail outlet in the Terminal 2 transit area.
Investigators subsequently established the identities of the suspects and arrested them.
According to reports, the teenager allegedly took three pairs of sunglasses worth about S$1,462 from a store and left without paying.
The 16-year-old is also alleged to have stolen goods worth close to S$5,000 from six retail outlets, according to The Straits Times.
Mother allegedly involved in separate theft cases
Police said the mother was investigated separately for alleged shop thefts at Changi Airport.
Items believed to be connected to the cases were recovered during the investigation.
AsiaOne reported that the total value of items allegedly involved in the cases was nearly S$6,500, although the precise charges and amounts attributable to each alleged offence will be determined through the court process.
The distinction is important because the mother and son are facing separate allegations, rather than a single joint theft charge.
Both due in court
The pair are scheduled to be charged on Sept. 16.
As the cases are now entering the court process, the allegations have not been proven. Any criminal liability will ultimately be determined through Singapore’s legal proceedings.
The case also highlights the role of airport police in investigating thefts within Changi’s retail areas, which include stores serving passengers in both public and transit zones.
Why the case is drawing attention
Changi Airport is one of Singapore’s major international transport hubs, and its transit areas contain numerous duty-free, luxury, fashion and specialty retail outlets.
The alleged incident comes after other recent shop-theft cases involving foreign nationals at or around Changi Airport, showing the continued attention Singapore authorities are placing on retail theft at the airport.
For the mother and son, however, the immediate focus is now the court proceedings scheduled for Sept. 16.
What began as separate theft reports inside airport shops has now turned into a court case involving a parent and her teenage son — with the next stage set to unfold before Singapore’s courts.
