A man was found dead inside an electrical substation beneath the Pancoran LRT Station in South Jakarta, with police suspecting he may have entered the high-voltage facility in an attempt to steal cables.
The unidentified man was discovered on Sept. 1 after people nearby reportedly noticed a foul smell coming from the area. Police found a white sack, a hacksaw and a hat near the body.
Police said the man appeared to have entered the substation from below and climbed to its second level, where he was believed to have been electrocuted by high-voltage equipment. His identity remains unknown and the body was taken to RS Polri Kramat Jati for examination.
The suspected cable-theft theory is supported by the tools found at the scene, although investigators are still examining the evidence and circumstances surrounding the death. Authorities have also said there were no apparent signs of homicide.
PLN later reported damage to several parts of the electrical infrastructure. The substation door, previously locked, was found damaged and forced open, while cables and other components inside had been disturbed.
LRT Jabodebek said the substation belongs to PLN and confirmed that the incident did not disrupt LRT operations.
The investigation remains ongoing as authorities work to identify the man and establish exactly what happened inside the high-voltage facility.
