A magnitude 5.3 earthquake struck offshore of Davao Oriental on Saturday afternoon, August 22, 2026, according to state seismologists, sending another reminder of the active seismic conditions in eastern Mindanao.
The earthquake was recorded at 3:14 p.m., with its epicenter located east of Tarragona, Davao Oriental, based on information reported by PHIVOLCS and carried by GMA News and other Philippine news outlets.
The tremor comes as Davao Oriental and neighboring areas continue to experience notable earthquake activity in recent months, including several moderate-to-strong earthquakes recorded offshore.
WHAT HAPPENED?
The latest quake was classified as tectonic in origin, meaning it was generated by movement within the Earth’s crust rather than by volcanic activity.

Initial reports identified the earthquake as occurring offshore near Tarragona. Independent reporting by Cebu Daily News/Inquirer also placed the event east of Tarragona and confirmed the 3:14 p.m. occurrence.
WHY DAVAO ORIENTAL REMAINS UNDER THE SPOTLIGHT
The latest earthquake is not an isolated seismic event for the province.
Davao Oriental experienced significant earthquake activity in 2025, including a major offshore earthquake sequence that generated numerous aftershocks. PHIVOLCS data and subsequent reports documented hundreds of aftershocks following the major October 2025 events.

More recently, Davao Oriental was among the areas affected by significant seismic activity elsewhere in Mindanao, underscoring the region’s exposure to earthquakes.
SHOULD RESIDENTS BE WORRIED?
A magnitude 5.3 earthquake can be strongly felt near its source, but magnitude alone does not determine whether an earthquake will cause damage. Depth, distance from populated areas, local ground conditions and the quality of structures all influence its effects.
Residents should also remember that aftershocks are possible following an earthquake. PHIVOLCS has previously advised the public to remain alert for additional shaking after moderate earthquakes.
