Bayern Munich and Germany star Jamal Musiala has revealed that a neurological condition was behind two frightening on-field collapses within four days, reassuring fans that the episodes are temporary, treatable and being closely monitored by specialists.
Jamal Musiala has broken his silence after suffering a second worrying collapse during Bayern Munich’s preseason preparations, revealing that he has been diagnosed with a neurological dysfunction that causes brief, temporary episodes of absence.
The 23-year-old midfielder’s latest incident occurred Tuesday during Bayern’s 4-2 friendly victory over Heidenheim. Musiala had only recently entered the match as a substitute when he suddenly went down and required medical attention before being helped from the field.
The incident immediately raised concerns because it came just days after Musiala experienced a similar episode during Bayern’s 3-1 preseason victory over RB Leipzig on Aug. 15.
Musiala reveals what caused the collapses
Following the second incident, Musiala addressed supporters directly and explained that medical examinations had identified a neurological problem responsible for the episodes.
According to multiple reports, Musiala described the episodes as temporary neurological “absences” and said they are treatable. ESPN and The Guardian reported that the condition has been described as absence seizures, a type of seizure that can involve brief periods of impaired awareness.
Musiala also sought to reassure supporters, saying he is receiving medical care and working with specialists. Reports quoting his statement said he does not face an additional health risk from the condition and remains optimistic about continuing his football career.
The second collapse triggered fresh concern
The latest episode was particularly alarming because Musiala had already experienced a similar incident against Leipzig only four days earlier.
During the Heidenheim match, he collapsed just minutes after coming onto the pitch. Medical staff quickly attended to him before he was assisted away from the playing surface.
The back-to-back incidents prompted renewed attention surrounding the Bayern star’s health, particularly given his recent return from a significant period of injury rehabilitation.
Bayern aware of Musiala’s condition
Bayern Munich sporting director Max Eberl has also acknowledged that the club was aware of Musiala’s medical situation, while respecting the player’s privacy.
The midfielder’s disclosure provides greater clarity following the two incidents and shifts the focus away from speculation toward a condition that Musiala says is being actively managed with professional medical support.
What are absence seizures?
Absence seizures are neurological events characterized by brief interruptions in awareness. They can sometimes appear as a person suddenly staring blankly or becoming unresponsive for a short period.
Importantly, Musiala’s own description of his condition is the most relevant information regarding his individual case. While several outlets have described the episodes as absence seizures, the precise medical diagnosis and treatment plan should ultimately be determined by his doctors.
What this means for Musiala’s Bayern future
For now, Musiala’s message is one of reassurance rather than alarm.
The Bayern midfielder has indicated that he is receiving specialist care and intends to continue his normal life and football career once medically cleared.
That could make the next phase of his recovery particularly important. Bayern will have to balance Musiala’s desire to return with the need to ensure that his condition is properly managed before he resumes competitive football.
For a player viewed as one of Bayern’s most important attacking talents, his health will understandably take priority over any immediate return to action.
For now, Musiala’s message to supporters is clear: the collapses were frightening, but he says he is receiving the care he needs—and remains confident about what comes next.
