OCCIDENTAL MINDORO, Philippines — Residents in several parts of Occidental Mindoro are being urged to limit outdoor activities after thick haze was observed across portions of the province on Tuesday, September 1.
The local advisory comes as Philippine environmental authorities monitor haze affecting parts of the country, with smoke possibly linked to ongoing forest and land fires in Kalimantan, Indonesia.
According to the Occidental Mindoro Provincial Information Office, the haze may be associated with widespread fires in Indonesia, particularly in Sumatra and Kalimantan. Smoke from these fires can be transported across Southeast Asia by prevailing winds.
The Department of Environment and Natural Resources–Environmental Management Bureau (DENR-EMB) has also reported haze affecting parts of Metro Manila, Calabarzon and Mimaropa, while continuing to monitor air-quality conditions through its network of monitoring stations.
Residents urged to reduce outdoor exposure
People in areas where the haze is noticeable are being advised to avoid prolonged exposure outdoors.
Those who need to go outside are encouraged to wear a face mask to reduce the inhalation of smoke and fine particulate matter.
Health authorities are particularly urging caution among children, older adults and people who are more sensitive to air pollution, who may be more vulnerable to respiratory irritation when air quality deteriorates.
The situation is not limited to Occidental Mindoro.
In Metro Manila, DENR-EMB monitoring has recorded very unhealthy to acutely unhealthy air-quality conditions in several areas. GMA News reported that the bureau attributed the elevated pollution levels to haze possibly associated with fires in Kalimantan, Indonesia.
Quezon City, meanwhile, suspended in-person classes in its public schools after local monitoring stations recorded very unhealthy to acutely unhealthy air-quality readings. The city government also advised residents to wear masks and reduce outdoor exposure.
Why the haze is raising health concerns
Haze contains tiny airborne particles that can irritate the eyes, nose and respiratory system. Exposure can cause symptoms such as coughing, throat irritation and difficulty breathing, particularly among people who are vulnerable to poor air quality.
The DENR’s PM2.5 air-quality guidance classifies “very unhealthy” and “acutely unhealthy” conditions as levels at which people should take precautions and limit outdoor exposure, with those who have heart or respiratory conditions advised to remain indoors as much as possible.
For residents of Occidental Mindoro, officials are therefore urging the public to pay attention to local air-quality conditions rather than dismissing the haze as ordinary morning mist or weather-related cloudiness.
