KYRENIA, Cyprus — A desperate search-and-rescue operation is underway off northern Cyprus after a passenger ferry carrying nearly 270 people capsized shortly after leaving port, killing at least seven people and triggering a massive emergency response in the Mediterranean.
The ferry was travelling from Kyrenia (Girne) in northern Cyprus to Tasucu in Türkiye’s Mersin province when it began taking on water and later overturned. Authorities and rescue crews rushed to the scene as passengers wearing life jackets waited for help in the sea and around the overturned vessel.
The disaster unfolded on Sunday, August 30, and the situation remains fluid as emergency teams continue searching for people who may still be missing.
Hundreds Rescued as Race Against Time Continues
Turkish Cypriot officials said the vessel had 267 people on board — 259 passengers and eight crew members. Later reports from the Associated Press said around 237 people had been rescued, while authorities continued searching for others who remained unaccounted for.
The death toll has also risen sharply since the first reports emerged. Early accounts carried by international media said one person had died, but subsequent updates from authorities and major news organizations reported at least seven fatalities.
Rescued passengers were brought back to Kyrenia, where medical teams and ambulances were waiting to transfer those needing treatment to hospitals.
What Caused the Ferry to Capsize?
The exact cause of the disaster has not yet been officially determined.
Initial reports said the privately operated ferry began taking on water shortly after departing Kyrenia. Some accounts described difficult sea conditions, while officials have also indicated that the circumstances surrounding the flooding and capsizing will need to be investigated.
The vessel reportedly encountered trouble only a short distance from shore, allowing coast guard units, private boats and other nearby vessels to join the rescue effort quickly.
Video and images from the scene showed survivors in life jackets near the overturned ferry as rescuers worked urgently to bring people to safety.
Massive Rescue Operation Launched
Authorities in northern Cyprus and Türkiye mobilized coast guard units, rescue vessels, helicopters and medical teams as the scale of the emergency became clear.
Northern Cyprus officials said all available resources were being deployed, while Türkiye also provided support for the ongoing operation. The immediate priority, authorities said, is locating and rescuing every remaining passenger and crew member.
The tragedy has drawn attention to the busy sea route linking Kyrenia and Türkiye, which is served by passenger ferries and is an important connection across the eastern Mediterranean.

The number of casualties and those still unaccounted for may change as the search continues. Authorities have urged caution over unverified information while rescue teams work to establish a complete account of everyone who was on board.
