DIPOLOG CITY, Zamboanga del Norte — Police are investigating the deaths of an elderly couple and their adopted son who were found inside their home in Barangay Turno, Dipolog City, in a case that authorities say remains unresolved despite several potentially important clues discovered during the initial investigation.
The three family members were found dead inside the residence on Thursday, August 20, 2026, according to a report by GMA Regional TV One Mindanao. The father was 82 years old, his wife was 77, while their adopted son was 38.
Investigators found the bodies of the husband and wife in separate bedrooms, while their son’s body was discovered in the living room. Police said a bladed weapon and a coconut grater were being examined as objects that may have been used in the deaths.
Police Question Robbery Theory
One of the first possibilities investigators examined was whether someone had entered the residence to rob the family.
However, police said they found no apparent signs of forced entry, while investigators reportedly did not observe bloodstains outside the house. Those findings led authorities to consider other possible scenarios, although police have not announced a final determination regarding what occurred.
The absence of obvious forced entry is an important investigative detail, but by itself it does not establish who was responsible for the deaths or whether another person was involved.
Witness Reportedly Heard Family Arguing
Another element now being examined is what reportedly happened shortly before the family was found dead.
According to GMA’s report, a witness told authorities that the couple and their adopted son had been involved in a heated argument before the incident.
That account has become part of the investigation, but police have stressed that they have not confirmed whether the son killed his parents and then died by suicide.
That distinction is crucial: at this stage, the murder-suicide scenario remains an investigative possibility rather than an established conclusion.
What Police Are Investigating
Dipolog City Police Chief Lt. Col. Khisna Asaali said investigators were continuing to interview the family’s neighbors to reconstruct the events leading up to the deaths.
Police also said they had received information alleging that the son sometimes became angry when his parents did not give him money. Authorities additionally referred to reports concerning his mental condition. Those statements remain part of the information being evaluated by investigators and should not be interpreted as proof of responsibility.
Mental-health concerns alone do not establish that a person is violent or responsible for a crime, and investigators would still need physical, forensic and testimonial evidence to determine what actually happened inside the residence.
Investigation Remains Open
As of the latest report, authorities had not publicly announced a definitive motive or identified a confirmed perpetrator.
The Dipolog City Police Station continues to operate under Asaali’s leadership. Separate reporting earlier in 2026 also identified him as chief of the city police, while local police and barangay officials have recently been strengthening coordination on crime prevention and community security.
For now, several questions remain unanswered: Who inflicted the fatal injuries? Was anybody else inside the house? And what exactly happened after the reported argument?
Until investigators complete their examination of the physical evidence, witness accounts and circumstances surrounding all three deaths, any specific account of how the tragedy unfolded remains a theory—not a confirmed fact.
The case remains under investigation.
