MANILA, Philippines — Miss Universe 2018 Catriona Gray will no longer appear at the Miss Universe India 2026 grand coronation night, disappointing fans who had been expecting the Filipina beauty queen to make what she said would have been her first visit to India.
Gray’s management agency, Cornerstone Entertainment, confirmed the cancellation in a statement dated Friday, August 21, saying the former Miss Universe had been invited to participate in the highly anticipated national pageant but could no longer attend because some requirements connected to her appearance were not fulfilled.
“Certain conditions required for her participation could not be met,” the agency said, without specifying what those conditions were.
The wording immediately raised questions among pageant followers, but as of Saturday, August 22, no detailed explanation has been publicly released identifying the conditions involved or why they could not be satisfied.
Gray herself appeared just as disappointed by the last-minute change.
Sharing her management’s announcement on social media, the Filipino-Australian beauty queen apologized to supporters who had hoped to see her in India.
She said she had been excited to meet her Indian fans and experience the country for the first time, adding that she hoped another opportunity to visit would come soon. She also wished the Miss Universe India contestants well ahead of the competition.
Miss Universe India 2026 finale set for August 23
Gray’s canceled appearance comes just before the Miss Universe India 2026 grand finale on Sunday, August 23, where a new national titleholder will be selected to represent India at the international Miss Universe competition.
The national pageant features 52 finalists from across India, according to reports covering this year’s competition. The contestants have gone through several stages of preparation, including a sashing ceremony, introduction and speech rounds, a swimsuit competition in Bengaluru, and an intensive grooming program near Indore.
The finale is scheduled to take place at Zee Studios in Jaipur, Rajasthan, with reigning Miss Universe India Manika Vishwakarma expected to crown her successor.
The eventual winner will carry India’s hopes to the next Miss Universe competition.
