A routine flight from Bangkok to Hong Kong turned into a police investigation after a 57-year-old man was arrested over the alleged theft of ฿25,000 in cash from another passenger’s bag.
Hong Kong police arrested the man after an HK Express flight from Thailand landed in Hong Kong, with authorities investigating the alleged theft as an in-flight crime. The incident was reported by multiple Hong Kong media outlets, including the South China Morning Post and The Standard.
What allegedly happened onboard?
According to the South China Morning Post, the suspect allegedly walked from the rear of the aircraft toward the front of the cabin before opening an overhead storage compartment.
He allegedly rummaged through a black bag and removed cash, putting the money into his pocket. Another passenger reportedly witnessed what was happening and recorded the incident on a smartphone before alerting cabin crew.
The cash was reportedly ฿25,000, equivalent to approximately HK$5,885 at the exchange rate cited in the reports. Hong Kong police estimated the stolen foreign currency at around HK$6,000.
After the report was made, cabin crew reportedly identified the owner of the bag and alerted airport authorities. The suspect was subsequently arrested after the aircraft arrived in Hong Kong.
Why this case is drawing attention
The incident comes amid continuing concern over in-flight thefts in Asia, particularly thefts involving valuables stored in overhead compartments.
Hong Kong has previously recorded a significant number of theft cases aboard aircraft. In a separate 2024 case, a 57-year-old mainland Chinese man was arrested after a passenger reported that a Rolex worth about HK$330,000, cash and other valuables had allegedly been taken from his hand luggage on an HK Express flight from Vietnam. Police recovered the items and arrested the suspect.
The earlier case prompted renewed warnings for travelers to keep valuable belongings secure and to alert cabin crew immediately if they notice suspicious activity.
A warning for travelers
The latest Bangkok–Hong Kong incident is a reminder that aircraft cabins are not immune from opportunistic theft. Passengers can reduce the risk by keeping cash, passports, electronics, jewelry and other valuables in a personal bag that remains within sight or reach whenever practical.
Importantly, the current case involves an allegation. The 57-year-old passenger has been arrested on suspicion of theft, but an arrest does not establish guilt. The investigation remains ongoing.
